Our Education Document of the Month for December is this letter from W E Goodacre, Clerk to the Guardians of the Mansfield Poor Law Union, to the Poor Law Board, 1852. Here he describes a request for a Christmas meal for the inmates of Mansfield Workhouse. (MH 12/9363/397)
“A subscription has been entered into in Mansfield to afford a treat of roast beef and plum pudding to the inmates of the workhouse on Christmas Day next [instead of the usual diet of the day]”
“Great inconvenience would arise from the treat being given on the Christmas day and I was instructed to request that you would be pleased to sanction it being given on a subsequent day, either Dec 31st or January 1st.”
