A cave deep in the woods would always hold the attraction of exploration and the thrill of danger, especially for the young at heart! Where is this one and has the scene changed much in the last 150 years?
Rory_Sherlock was first to identify this as 'Badger's Cave', one of the colourfully named features of Blarney Castle and Gardens, and one of at least two caves beneath the old castle itself. The other, according to the equally
colourful description of the Castle's website is known as 'the Dungeon'....

Can't place it. I'm sure I know it, though.

I think that's one of the caves under Blarney Castle - here's a modern image from Flickr (jodee_gldcst) www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/4846891823/in/photolis...

Thanks https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]. Map tags, and description all duly updated :) (As an aside, I Evening Mary recognised this immediately. Not because of some inate and unfathomable ability to derive location from the shadow from a blade of grass I'm looking at you https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected], https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley, https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet, et al. But because this was a near fabled cave to us as children. Or, at least, the promise of going back there "this time with torches!". Having been back there since, now electrified and lit, it has lost that FamousFive/exploration/mystery appeal...)
