Willard M. Frye enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1914. He was originally assigned to the battleship New York and was onboard the U.S.S. Finland when it was torpedoed. He was eventually made Second Quartermaster. At the end of his term of service, he visited his brother, Paul Frye of Concord Road.
