Joseph Frederick Barker was born on August 13th, 1884 in Athens, Ohio. He and his wife, Sophie Hargis, were married July 25th, 1910. Mr. Barker graduated from Ohio State in 1908 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He became a professor of Agricultural Chemistry and Soils at Ohio State in 1916. Mr. Barker became a member of the Upper Arlington School Board in 1922. Sophie Barker was a contributor to the Norwester Magazine and active in the local Campfire Girls organization. By 1919, the couple lived at 1802 Coventry Road and had two children, Josephine June and Joseph Clinton.
