I wonder if the sign at the top of No.4 Bridge Street (now an apartment block called Cliveden) was for passing biplanes with airmail?

The telegraph poles would indicate that this photo was taken earlier than 1930s, as also the horse-drawn vehicle in the bottom R corner. Another photo by Sam Hood from c1900 looking down Bridge St from George shows the same smaller telegraph pole in front of the previous 2-storey building at No 4 Bridge. All that we need now is to find when the current 12-storey building was built, which will give us the earliest possible date.

OK! According to NSW Heritage listing, Birts Building, now Cliveden, at 4 Bridge Street was completed in 1915. The site was formerly occupied by W.N. Beaumont & Company’s Federal Electrical and Engineering Works, a two storey brick warehouse building.
