"Diesterweg’s Hulpkas voor Behoeftige Schoolkinderen" (Antwerpen) richtte in 1904 een van de eerste openluchtscholen ter wereld op, de “Diesterweg's Bestendige Schoolkolonie” te Kalmthout. Zwakkere kinderen uit de Antwerpse stadsscholen konden er gedurende een aantal maanden van een kuur genieten. De leerplicht werd in 1914 in België ingevoerd.

"Diesterweg’s Hulpkas voor Behoeftige Schoolkinderen", a childcare organisation founded by teachers of the Antwerp city schools to assist pupils of poor families, also started with one of the first open air schools in history at Kalmthout. Children with poor health were allowed to spend several months in the open air school. Compulsory education was implemented in Belgium in 1914.
