In a New Year of promise and expectation we have the old reliable Robert French of Lawrence Photography to start us off. Here is
Lynch's Castle, Shop Street in Galway on what must have been a quiet day. Today, even early in the morning this street seems to hum with life, those up early, those going home late, those that have little to do but stand around and, inevitably, the music and life of the city!
To all a Happy New Year from all at Library Towers and the Three Marys!

Happy New Year Danny, chosen with you in mind of course!

Glad you came West to start the New Year. Great photo. The old tram operated between 1879 and 1918 when a shortage of horses and changing times finished it off. Many thanks for all the photos you brought us last year and looking forward to your choices for this year. The photo features what John B Keane regarded as one of the outstanding features of Irish towns in days gone by, the corner boys.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected] Thank you Mike, we love going West and keep searching out good images to indulge ourselves. I was thinking the same about the "corner boys" a forgotten aspect of times gone by when people had time on their hands!

Happy new year all! I don't have much to add to this. Other than perhaps to offer this link (from the Galway Civic Trust) which has a little on Lynch's Castle ..

Is the dog the same one as seen in this photo ? Black head, docked tail etc ... https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/6988679474

Interesting to compare this earlier photo via https://www.flickr.com/photos/chethams_library/ - no street lamp, a soap and candle shop, and more corner boys ... https://www.flickr.com/photos/chethams_library/9038805303/

Thanks all! I've updated the map, added a note to the date range, "borrowed" that link from guliolopez, and tweaked the tags. Great to be back, and looking forward to lots of banter for 2017 :)

You're missing a word in your date summary - "though maybe possibly than c.1900" - presumably 'later'?
