John Stephen opened the first boutique in Carnaby Street in 1958, and was soon followed by designers such as Cecil Gee and Mary Quant, who named the Mini skirt after her favourite car! Soho's Marquee club was not far from the street, and it attracted recording artists such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to the atea, cementing it as one of the hippest parts of London in the "Swinging Sixties".

I'd say this is 1966, not 69...every year of 60s London had a different look and this look would have been old in 1969, so was Carnaby St. by then.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected] I'd have to agree that this photo looks like it was taken circa 1966 rather than '69; certainly no later than '67. Popular styles changed rapidly in the '60's, so that even a few months after this picture was taken it would have already looked out of date. Particularly true in a cosmopolitan city like London, where they were typically ahead of the styles in the U.S. However, it's a great snapshot of a very colourful and all too brief period in pop culture history.

Agree with everyone else who says this shot is NOT 1969 - look at the guy on the left, he's mid 1960s mod through and through. By the late 60s hair had gone long and shaggy and clothing had psyched out - these people would have looked seriously unfashionable in the late 60s.

The stripey mini dress style here was worn by Suzy Kendall in the 1967 film 'Up the Junction'. So i'd say '67.

This picture has three identifiers attached to it: Carnaby Street, teenagers, 1969. Only the first is correct, because it shows Cranks food shop which did exist there. The people are all 20-something and, as many people have said, the year is most likely 1966. It's also clearly posed, a set-up with models, and only represents the "Vogue" end of the scene.
