A rare visit to the Stereo Pairs collection takes us out foreign, to Bucks House no less and the "Picture Gallery". The titles as inserted on the slide are in French which may raise questions as to its provenance and source(?)
sharon.corbet that the image was a work by the studios of Ferrier, Soulier & Levy (
Wikipedia) who did glass stereographs (note
similar image with comparable French sub-text). It's suggested that the image was taken close to the middle of the 1860-1880s range - but certainly some time before redevelopment of the room and its ceiling in the early 20th century....

it would be interesting to have a modern day version to compare!

Hmm - perhaps the 'good' carpet was rolled up and put away for the stereo photo ?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/lizinitaly It seems to have a different, lower roof now - https://www.flickr.com/photos/castlekay/2634235231/ @ https://www.flickr.com/photos/britishmonarchy/ Help! Please!

There's a bit in this 1841 book describing why the roof of the picture gallery (as above) is excellent for lighting purposes.
sharon.corbet
[https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] I think the roof change happened around 1913/4 when the facade of Buckingham Palace was redone.

This (and a number of others in the NLI), seem to come from the catalogue of Ferrier, Soulier & Levy, who did glass stereographs. (See similarly labelled stereographs of Schaffhausen here.)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/129555378@N07 Thanks! Still waiting for input from Her Majesty... There are a couple of reclining nudes either side of the far door which are not in the 1873 photo (see link in first comment). Removed for late-Victorian decorum, or added later ?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/129555378@N07 I figured that there must be an issue around the authorship of the images given the French sub-titles! https://www.flickr.com/photos/66151649@N02 Danny may be hypnotised by this but I have been rendered seasick which means there will be no more work done in Library Towers today!!!!

A thought - maybe this is connected to two stereo views of St Paul's Cathedral, London, numbered on the side (like 422 above) as 424 and 425 - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000563741 catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000563742/Home 424 was eventually dated to c. 1865 - [https://www.flickr.com/photos/nlireland/8096307482/]
