Frederick William (Fred) Elwell was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire on the 29th June 1870. He was a painter in oils of portraits, interiors and figurative subjects. Elwell exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1894 and the Royal Academy, where he became a member in 1938. He also painted a portrait of King George V in 1932.
This photograph shows Elwell as a young boy in or around 1885.
He died on 3rd January 1958, having achieved considerable standing as a professional painter and local notoriety for his artworks.
