Another wonderful picture of the not-so-good old days. Dated "August 1901" - it was just after an outbreak of bubonic plague in the Rocks. The whole area was resumed by the NSW government for slum clearance. Maybe these photos were taken for evidence?
The next photo is from the other end of the street, possibly at the same time.

It is fun to see what were once considered to be complete slums, are now referred to as a 'renovator's delight'.

trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/126456615 - this pic appeared in the Sunday Times on 1st June, 1913...accompanying one of Mary Salmon's historical articles on old Sydney...this is the earliest publication that I've found so far...see bottom pic...
