Papes Yard, Keldgate, Beverley c.1912
This photograph of Keldgate shows the entrance to Papes Yard (first opening) and Cook’s Yard (second opening). Papes Yard was a former name for School Lane, used frequently during the latter part of the 19th century.
Cook’s Yard appears on the 1861 census when it belonged to Joseph Cook who had a Shoemaker’s shop next door. The car in the image was owned by M.B. Bannister and the gentleman riding the bicycle is Mr Ockleton, who lived at 134 Keldgate.
