The Guildhall building situated in Register Square dates back to medieval times.

Register Square was named after the Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths situated there and was once called Cross Lane.

On the right of the photograph is the Post Office, which was purpose built in 1905. There were four daily deliveries at 7am, 1pm, 5pm and 7.20pm, including Saturdays.
