Around 1870 the A&A photo company took a studio portrait of this athlete in his running costume and shoes. While we have no definitive proof, it is possible that this is a picture of A. E. Bird who raced against E. Ford amateur champion runner of Victoria.
The image is from around the time this event took place and the runner is wearing what looks like an English rose, suggesting it may be Bird. We would welcome any further information which we could use to verify whether this is in fact his portrait.
