It is after some consideration about proper and useful working postures that I have come to the conclusion that the pose is too artificial to be realistic. Especially the forceps arms impose quite a sense of impracticality. "It's all for the camera, darling. Gotta make engineering work interesting for the reading public."

The left arm could easily be pulling an element aside while the right makes an adjustment.

  • profile

    • 13/Feb/2009 05:08:12

Could be, 1 Rod, could be. I was wondering how agile you can be and how much leverage you can exert when working with such outstreched arms, and how much visual feedback you can get at that distance and from that perspective. That just does not appear to be an effective posture for engineering work. The male instructor supervising the work from above, appearing into view like an intervening supreme heavenly being in conjunction with the caption give the picture subtones of patronizing condescendence, not of defiant confidence and proud heroism. But thenm you see, this was the 1940s, so nobody really noticed. Maybe it even matched expectations or it was what you could dare to depict within the narrow limits of allowable - and under the circumstances of those times - necessary emancipation.

As a combat vet of WWII (Yes, I understand about the forties) perhaps I was "taking sides"; however as a working engineer and one who worked on rockets, in some tough positions, I think the posture not all that unrealistic. My sister worked in a "war plant" when I was in the millitary. Peace.

after reading others comments. and rechecking this photo . I'd bet the photographer caught them working on the project and perhaps they were focused on the job at hand and not on the photo shooter. I'd say she was using left hand for balance and holding a wrench on right hand so the other worker could tighten a nut that would be critical to be tight in use of engine. Thanks to all those dedicated people who all worked together to solve problems in Manufacturing.

Warm Greetings: After WWII, my father returned home and began cross country truck driving, later completed college schooling as an artisit, and technical illustrator. When I was still young (but old enough to remember), he'd take me to work with him on occassion at the Brooklyn Ship Yards, where my father was on government contract. I remember seeing the huge ships that were under construction there- just as awesome as the photo above. In later years we moved to Long Island, lived a stone's throw from Grumman's air filed and aircraft manufacturers; it was a common sight to see full scale plane construction of transport, and new jet planes rolling off the assembly line. It also served as a test field. We also lived close to the active military base at Mitchell Field, between Uniondale and Garden City/ Westbury, NY- I visited these places and it was amazing to go in the hangers and see huge engines, huge transport planes, jets, and fighter planes on the tarmac, some of which rumbled the ground and broke the sound barrier over our homes! The mechanics we met would explain how critical their jobs were, in keeping the planes in shape, and ready to take flight at a moments notice. During the war years, women played an enormous part in the war effort. This photo brings many memories to mind... Fantastic!

but what you are not taking into account is the photography of the day. Flash bulbs dangerous in inflammable sites. But what exactly is the plane. still its a great picture.

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/bobel1165 Nope, that's a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp. 14 cylinders, not 18, but still twin-row. For a C-47 transport (military DC-3).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/10477733@N03 The plane was a Douglas C-47 Skytrain transport, the military version of the DC-3. They were built by the thousands during World War 2, both in Douglas's Long Beach plant shown here and in other plants. Many went on to have long careers in airline service, still using engines like this.
