Oooops! No not the winter Olympics, but sand skiing in Cronulla. As the northern hemisphere is cold and ready for the Winter Olympics, Cronulla is currently basking in perfect summer weather. (When this photo was taken in July 1934 it was winter in Australia)

Format: Glass negative

:) I used to have wooden skis and poles similar to this in the 50s, early 60s. And the ski bindings were like springs around the back of the boots which had deep grooves. What memories! My grand mother used to wear a long skirt with bristles at the bottom when she was skiing (overseas).

lol, great one State Library! You had me fooled! :) I was a bit puzzled why the guy on the left is wearing a short sleeved shirt and the guy on the right an outfit that could have been worn in the snow. But then I thought, some may be feeling hot in the winter sun, some may be feeling cool! I miss those magnificent sand dunes at Cronulla! A great shot in b & w! :)

Hi quasymody The Curator of Photographs wrote the following about Sam's photojournalism career: "In 1918 he acquired the Dalny Studio at 124 Pitt Street, and began to expand his business into press photography, providing photographs for the Sydney Mail, the Australasian, the Daily Guardian, the Daily Telegraph Pictorial, the Labor Daily, the Sun, the Daily News and the Sydney Morning Herald. Press photography increasingly came to dominate his business, and in 1934 he joined the Labor Daily for a short time as a full-time photographer, engaging other staff to look after his studio. By the mid-1930s most newspapers employed their own photographers, and Hood's commissions from the papers began to decline."
