Already standing tall with the help of a chair, who could have foretold that this little chap would grow up to become a great general, General Sir John Monash, whose bold new methods helped turn the tide against Germany? After commanding ten divisions of Australian, Canadian, American and British troops and saving so many Allied soldiers from the stalemate and slaughter, George V knighted him in the field at Amiens, which no monarch had done since George II.
In 2015 the State Library will be showcasing its huge collection of World War 1 Australiana, for the Centenary commemoration of the Great War

Love this picture and the history! I've learned something new this morning and will have to do a little more research. The George II, "2015" field Knighting, date jumped off the page at me though...

Monash Public Library Service
In 1994, with the amalgamation of the two former cities of Oakleigh and Waverley, a name was needed for the new municipality. The name Monash (in honor of Sir John Monash) was suggested by Councillor Eric Sekfy of Oakleigh and the Local Government Board approved it. See more about the Sir John Monash at the City of Monash's website.
