Darrell Figgis
Description: The name Darrell Figgis rings no bells for this Mary! I never heard of him before and have no idea what part he played in Irish Political life? Up to now the only Figgis I knew of was the bookshop, a heaven on Dawson Street where many happy hours were passed and purchases made. It is fitting however that this Figgis has a book tucked comfortably up under his oxter. What we learned about Darrell Figgis (1882–1925) today explained perhaps why some of us had not heard much about him. As an early member of the Irish Volunteers, a party to the Howth gun-running, an internee following the Rising and Anti-Conscription crackdown, a TD in the 3rd and 4th Dáil, and chair of the Constitution Committee, one might imagine Figgis was as notable as other early members of Sinn Féin. (Like Griffith, Collins, DeV, Brugha - about whom we know much more). However, as was perhaps not uncommon at that fractious time, Figgis fell-out with others in the new political landscape, and was subject to attack. Both physically and politically. A dapper figure in the early 1920s, in one attack, his detractors forcibly cut his trademark beard. Which perhaps helps date this image. A more tragic figure by the mid-1920s, following the deaths of the women in his life, Figgis took his own. A collection of his manuscripts was published after his death, and titled "Recollections of the Irish War".... Photographers: Various Collection: Irish Political Figures Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1917-1925. Likely after mid-1923 (beard attack). And before late-1925 (death). Group of what may be foreign dignitaries
Description: A Fez, furs, feathers, monocles, moustaches, spats, top hats, flowers all add up to a very well dressed group with a lot of self esteem and no little wealth and importance. The army officer at the rear is clearly wearing an early Irish Army uniform so we can take it that it was taken in Ireland but what else do we know about them? Almost simultaneously [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] suggested that this image is from the same period as a previous image from this stream. If so, it would date this image to 1924 (rather than the c.1922 of the catalogue entry), and probably capture a group of dignitaries, possibly at the Chief Steward's Lodge, during the inaugural Tailteann Games.... Horse drawn plough, Ring of Kerry
Description: Given the low response to yesterdays wonderful shot we may need to repost it later as we are obviously in the holiday season with our contributors away on leave? Today sees a rare visit to the Tilbrook collection and to the Ring of Kerry. In colour no less. This lovely image of a horse-drawn plough with the sun streaming down on the furrowed ground would lighten the heart and raise our hopes! It is appropriate in its own way as today the 2017 Dublin Horse Show begins - with all the excitement, activity and of course horses galore. I hope they have a great show! Upper balcony foyer at the Paramount Theatre, Newcastle
Description: View of the upper balcony foyer at the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon’s luxurious décor made it one of the country’s finest cinemas and arguably the North East’s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building’s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. Support blocks are laid out for the Northbank
Description: Support blocks are laid out for the cargo ship 'Northbank', 13 September 1956 (TWAM ref. DS.DOX/4/PH/1/819/1/2). This album documents the construction of the cargo ship ‘Northbank’ by the famous shipbuilding firm William Doxford & Sons at its Pallion yard, Sunderland. Most of these images are progress photographs, taken a week apart between September 1956 and January 1957 from approximately the same spot. They give a fascinating insight into how the vessel was built. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Eating toffee apples at the Hoppings
Description: Children eating toffee apples at the Hoppings on Newcastle Town Moor, June 1973 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/61856L). The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle's Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land. The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide, to counter-attract the 'Summer Race Meeting' at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness. It proved to be a great success and the fair is still being enjoyed to this very day. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Thomas Ashe, half-length portrait
Description: A fine Keogh portrait of the man who was probably, militarily at least, the most successful and least celebrated 1916 leader! One thing we can be sure of is that the outer end of the date range on this will be changed! With thanks to today's contributors, it seems that this portrait of Thomas Ashe (dating to c.1914-1917 and part of a series published by Keogh brothers about the 1916 leadership) was widely used. There are examples of buttons and memorial plaques based upon it in the comment thread. The image also appears on the entry for Ashe (and his burial) at the Glasnevin Trust website. This entry describes that he died in 1917, from pnumonia and other complications (arising from his treatment, including forible feeding, while imprisoned at Mountjoy).... Photographer: Brendan Keogh Collection: Keogh Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1914-1923. But certainly before 1917 (date of death). NLI Ref: KE 2 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Unloading esparto grass at the Corporation Quay
Description: View of esparto grass being discharged to railway waggons at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, August 1948 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/1813A). It would then be conveyed to local paper mills. This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Coronation babies
Description: The Lady Mayoress, Violet Grantham, presenting cheques for £5 to the mothers of two 'coronation babies', born on 12 May 1937, the day of King George VI's coronation, 27 May 1937 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/5/3). These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham’s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses. The Waterford Cats?
Description: A team in Waterford with Kilkenny-like vertical stripes may not have been too popular in inter-county circles - but these lads look like they could cope with the slagging! A fine Poole shot of a hurling team to remind us that yet another All Ireland season is in full swing. With thanks to all of the contributions today, in particular Niall McAuley, swordscookie, j.coffey78, and guliolopez, we know that the team pictured (or at least most of them) challenged for the 1916 Waterford County Hurling Final around the time of this photo. They forced a replay with Ferrybank GAA club. But lost out to Ferrybank in the end 5-0 to 3-3. guliolopez helpfully links us to a write up of the replayed final which lists the team as:  T King (goal), J Hogan, L Cantwell, R Cantwell, P Durley, T Smyth, W Walsh, J Power, M Fitzpatrick, M Baldwin, P Purcell, W Sullivan, T McCormack, J Geary, R McKenna A player who didn't make the replay (D Quinn) may also be captured here. It's proposed that, as perhaps the person who commissioned the photo, J(ohn?) Hogan could be the captain pictured.... Photographer: A. H.
