Civic Guards Wexford, group
Description: This early photograph of the Irish Police (while they were still known as the Civic Guards) shows a police service in its infancy. Two officers, three sergeants and the remaining "Guards" make up the station party of what would appear to be Wexford Town. But is that the case? And the consensus is that it probably *is* the case - with a strong possibility that this image was captured outside the barracks in Wexford town... Photographer: A. H. Group of what may be foreign dignitaries
Description: A Fez, furs, feathers, monocles, moustaches, spats, top hats, flowers all add up to a very well dressed group with a lot of self esteem and no little wealth and importance. The army officer at the rear is clearly wearing an early Irish Army uniform so we can take it that it was taken in Ireland but what else do we know about them? Almost simultaneously [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] suggested that this image is from the same period as a previous image from this stream. If so, it would date this image to 1924 (rather than the c.1922 of the catalogue entry), and probably capture a group of dignitaries, possibly at the Chief Steward's Lodge, during the inaugural Tailteann Games.... Bracing between the Tyne Bridge arches
Description: Photograph of the 'K' bracing between the arches of Tyne Bridge, taken during its construction on 17 February 1928 (TWAM ref. 3730/15/9). The Tyne Bridge is one of the North East’s most iconic landmarks. These photographs were taken by James Bacon & Sons of Newcastle and document its construction from March 1927 to October 1928. They belonged to James Geddie, who was Chief Assistant Engineer on the construction of the Bridge with Dorman, Long & Co. Ltd. of Middlesbrough. Aerial view along the River Wear, 1965
Description: Aerial view along the River Wear, showing the North Sands shipyard in the foreground, June 1965 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/36311A). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Wedding group : commissioned by Mr. Magner, Clonmel
Description: Hats, fur coats, fur stoles, wing collars, centre partings, cows-licks and so much more to show how fashions have changed since this shot was taken for Mr. Magner way back when! I'm not too sure I would want to take on the mother-in-law second from the right! Quick off the mark this morning, sharon.corbet gave us the text of the newspaper announcement of the wedding pictured:  MAGNER AND SMYTH—October 9, 1917, at Tramore, by the Rev. T. O'Brien, C.C., Passage-West,- William J. Magner, eldest son of John Magner, Clonmel, to Catherine (Kitty) Smyth, daughter of Mr. Edmund Smyth, Cattle Dealer, Clonmel The date, most of the subjects, and possible town/county locations were therefore identified. And our intrepid band of Flickroonies quickly filled-in some background. Including that the groom (William Magner) was almost certainly from the Clonmel family behind the Magners/Bulmers cider brand. And that the bride's family (Kitty Smyth) was involved in the cattle and newspaper trades in the same town.... Photographer: A. H. Thomas Ashe, half-length portrait
Description: A fine Keogh portrait of the man who was probably, militarily at least, the most successful and least celebrated 1916 leader! One thing we can be sure of is that the outer end of the date range on this will be changed! With thanks to today's contributors, it seems that this portrait of Thomas Ashe (dating to c.1914-1917 and part of a series published by Keogh brothers about the 1916 leadership) was widely used. There are examples of buttons and memorial plaques based upon it in the comment thread. The image also appears on the entry for Ashe (and his burial) at the Glasnevin Trust website. This entry describes that he died in 1917, from pnumonia and other complications (arising from his treatment, including forible feeding, while imprisoned at Mountjoy).... Photographer: Brendan Keogh Collection: Keogh Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1914-1923. But certainly before 1917 (date of death). Description: Postcard of the Training Ship 'Wellesley' on fire at North Shields, 11 March 1914 (TWAM ref. DX1305/1/1). The vessel was destroyed by the blaze. It served as an industrial school for destitute boys. The postcard is unused. This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. Casts a long shadow! An ESB tractor and wide load on the Naas Road.
Description: Perhaps the alternative title for this should be "wheeling by"? An image from the O'Dea collection of a giant piece of electrical equipment for the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). This was taken out on the Naas Road where it had apparently escaped the traffic congestion it had caused in Dublins city centre and was about to cause in towns such as Naas and Newbridge! The leading tractor, pulling the low-loader, is identified as a Scammell Transporter/Tractor. The precise spot on the Naas road is not (yet?) confirmed... Photographer: James P. Army band and people in a field
Description: Today we make a rare visit to the Hogan-Wilson collection, and while it may not be our clearest photograph ever, you can see enough detail to suggest that this is a military procession. Perhaps a funeral? I like that all the cattle to the right seem to be focused on the proceedings. What are the chances of discovering the location? The community pulled-out all the stops on this one, and propose at least two possible candidates on subject, date and location. Based on the 1924 date in the catalogue, and the possible mixed Garda and army cortege, guliolopez suggests that this could be the funeral of Garda John Murrin at Bruckless, County Donegal. (He had been shot at Carrick-on-Suir in May 1924, and succumbed to his wounds later in the year). While there is a reasonable overlap on date and subject matter, there is less certainty on the location... In a parallel thread, and based on the description and army presence, Rory_Sherlock suggests this might be the 1922 funeral of army Sgt Michael Roche at Doolin, County Clare. (He had been killed in a grenade explosion at Tralee in August 1922). While there is less overlap with the catalogue range, we've learned before that they are not always reliable, and there seems more overlap and certainty on landscape and location. There is perhaps a consensus building that we're looking at a Hogan capture of the latter army/Roche funeral..... Photographer: W. D. Hogan Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection Date: Catalogue suggests c.1924. Though possibly 1922.
