Boat race, Dodder River, Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin
Description: A most unusual image today from the lens of Elinor and Reginald Wiltshire. A sports scene with rowing featuring an eight oared boat race on the River Dodder at Rathfarnham in 1954. Morning Mary is surprised that there was a sufficiently wide part of the Dodder to accomodate it and a sufficiently long stretch (2000 metres) to enable a standard boat race. Who can throw some light on the matter? Photographer: Elinor Wiltshire Collection: Wiltshire Photographic Collection Date: 13 June 1954 NLI Ref: WIL g1[54] You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Darrell Figgis
Description: The name Darrell Figgis rings no bells for this Mary! I never heard of him before and have no idea what part he played in Irish Political life? Up to now the only Figgis I knew of was the bookshop, a heaven on Dawson Street where many happy hours were passed and purchases made. It is fitting however that this Figgis has a book tucked comfortably up under his oxter. What we learned about Darrell Figgis (1882–1925) today explained perhaps why some of us had not heard much about him. As an early member of the Irish Volunteers, a party to the Howth gun-running, an internee following the Rising and Anti-Conscription crackdown, a TD in the 3rd and 4th Dáil, and chair of the Constitution Committee, one might imagine Figgis was as notable as other early members of Sinn Féin. (Like Griffith, Collins, DeV, Brugha - about whom we know much more). However, as was perhaps not uncommon at that fractious time, Figgis fell-out with others in the new political landscape, and was subject to attack. Both physically and politically. A dapper figure in the early 1920s, in one attack, his detractors forcibly cut his trademark beard. Which perhaps helps date this image. A more tragic figure by the mid-1920s, following the deaths of the women in his life, Figgis took his own. A collection of his manuscripts was published after his death, and titled "Recollections of the Irish War".... Photographers: Various Collection: Irish Political Figures Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1917-1925. Likely after mid-1923 (beard attack). And before late-1925 (death). Group of what may be foreign dignitaries
Description: A Fez, furs, feathers, monocles, moustaches, spats, top hats, flowers all add up to a very well dressed group with a lot of self esteem and no little wealth and importance. The army officer at the rear is clearly wearing an early Irish Army uniform so we can take it that it was taken in Ireland but what else do we know about them? Almost simultaneously [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] suggested that this image is from the same period as a previous image from this stream. If so, it would date this image to 1924 (rather than the c.1922 of the catalogue entry), and probably capture a group of dignitaries, possibly at the Chief Steward's Lodge, during the inaugural Tailteann Games.... Photographer: W. D. Hogan Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection Date: Catalogue date c.1922. Possibly Aug c.1924 NLI Ref.: HOG190 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Paramount Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne
Description: View of the exterior of the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon’s luxurious décor made it one of the country’s finest cinemas and arguably the North East’s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building’s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society. Unloading esparto grass at the Corporation Quay
Description: View of esparto grass being discharged to railway waggons at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, August 1948 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/1813A). It would then be conveyed to local paper mills. This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Visit of Prince Albert to Readhead's shipyard
Description: Visit of Prince Albert (the future King George VI) to Readhead's shipyard, South Shields, 16 April 1920 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/5/8/2). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Coronation babies
Description: The Lady Mayoress, Violet Grantham, presenting cheques for £5 to the mothers of two 'coronation babies', born on 12 May 1937, the day of King George VI's coronation, 27 May 1937 (TWAM ref. DF.GRA/5/3). These images belong to a series of albums documenting John Grantham’s service to the City of Newcastle upon Tyne as its Sheriff 1924-1925 and its Lord Mayor 1936-1937. John Grantham was born in Blyth in 1877 and became a cinema proprietor in Newcastle. He was elected to the City Council in 1912 and became an alderman in 1932. The albums give us an interesting insight into the duties of Lord Mayor and Sheriff as well as a fascinating picture of the times. 2016 is the 800th anniversary of the creation of Newcastle's Mayoralty and Burgesses.
