Boat race, Dodder River, Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin
Description: A most unusual image today from the lens of Elinor and Reginald Wiltshire. A sports scene with rowing featuring an eight oared boat race on the River Dodder at Rathfarnham in 1954. Morning Mary is surprised that there was a sufficiently wide part of the Dodder to accomodate it and a sufficiently long stretch (2000 metres) to enable a standard boat race. Who can throw some light on the matter? Photographer: Elinor Wiltshire Collection: Wiltshire Photographic Collection Date: 13 June 1954 NLI Ref: WIL g1[54] You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

I.S. Varian & Co., brushmakers. North Dublin
Description: To finish off the week we make a visit to the Mason Collection. What a great variety of brushes, I wonder can we identify all the different uses? In the 1911 Census there are 337 people with "brush" as part of the description of their occupation. These included: Brush Maker, Brush Finisher, Brush Drawer, Brush Trade, Brush Manufacturer, Brush Washer, Brush Merchant, Brush Borer and Brush Traveler. While I'm not sure what a "Brush Traveler" may have done, does the "St Louis - 1904" signage suggest that these particular brushes went on a journey? This particular Mary must admit to knowing nothing of I.S Varian & Co, brushmakers - before today's researches that is. Particularly striking is the longevity of the business. First founded in Cork in 1798, the company was based from Dublin's Talbot Street since 1856 - and still operating from Walkinstown into the 21st century. They had upwards of 360 employees in the 1940s - some of whom continued an interesting employee renunion tradition on unique dates (4/4/1944, 5/5/1955, etc) - until recent decades. The other interesting thing (clearly) about the business were the displays of their wares. Including their display at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair. Given the mention of St Louis and 1904 in this particular display, it seems likely that (though probably not from the St Louis exhibition), our image dates from after this time. Perhaps 1904 - plus a few years..... Photographer: Thomas H. Mason Collection: Mason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Likely after c.1904. Paramount Theatre, Newcastle upon Tyne
Description: View of the exterior of the Paramount Theatre, Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, September 1931 (TWAM ref. DX1677/1/1). The Odeon Cinema opened on Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne on 7 September 1931. It as originally known as the Paramount Theatre but was taken over by Odeon in 1939. The Odeon’s luxurious décor made it one of the country’s finest cinemas and arguably the North East’s best loved. Most of the images in this album date from its opening and convey a real sense of the building’s elegance and beauty. Sadly the cinema closed in 2002 and was demolished in 2017. This image is from an album which was kindly donated to the Archives by the Northumberland & Newcastle Society. Casts a long shadow! An ESB tractor and wide load on the Naas Road.
Description: Perhaps the alternative title for this should be "wheeling by"? An image from the O'Dea collection of a giant piece of electrical equipment for the Electricity Supply Board (ESB). This was taken out on the Naas Road where it had apparently escaped the traffic congestion it had caused in Dublins city centre and was about to cause in towns such as Naas and Newbridge! The leading tractor, pulling the low-loader, is identified as a Scammell Transporter/Tractor. The precise spot on the Naas road is not (yet?) confirmed... Photographer: James P. A cargo liner from East Africa at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland
Description: View of the passenger / cargo ship Kenilworth Castle at the Corporation Quay, Sunderland, July 1949 (TWAM ref. DT.TUR/2/3177D). This set of images celebrates the 300th Anniversary of the establishment of the Port of Sunderland. The port authority was constituted in 1717 by Act of Parliament, which appointed the River Wear Commissioners to manage and improve the harbour and river. Since then the port has changed beyond recognition with the construction of piers, docks and quays and the dredging of the River Wear to make it wider and deeper. These developments were vital to the coal trade on which the region’s prosperity depended. The improvement of the river was also essential to the success of shipbuilding in Sunderland as well as allied industries such as marine engineering and ship repairing. These images are a reflection of Sunderland’s proud industrial history. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share these digital images within the spirit of The Commons. Mitrailleurs van het 7de Linieregiment poseren met hun honden | Machine gunners of the Belgian 7th Infantry Regiment pose with their dogs
In the first weeks of the war Pecher's unit, the 7th Line, would be employed in defensive actions in the northern part of the country, awaiting the arrival of the French and British Allies. A couple of sorties from the fortress Antwerp, in an attempt to interrupt the German advance through the country, led to severe casualties. Machine gunners identified by Jean Pecher as Krutwig and De Doncker. Photo by Jean Pecher. September 1914, 's Gravenwezel. Female shipyard workers at South Shields
Description: Female shipyard workers posing at the launch of the cargo ship 'Obra' from the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons Ltd, South Shields, 7 November 1945 (TWAM ref. DS.RDD/4/PH/1/548/1). This set celebrates the achievements of the shipyard of John Readhead & Sons. The firm has played a significant role in the North East’s illustrious shipbuilding history and the development of South Shields. The company began in 1865 when John Readhead, a shipyard manager, entered into business with J Softley at a small yard on the Lawe at South Shields. Following the dissolution of the partnership in 1872, it continued as John Readhead & Co on the same site until 1880 when the High West Yard was purchased. After Readhead’s four sons were taken into the business in 1888 the company traded as John Readhead & Sons becoming a limited company in 1908. In 1968 the company was absorbed by the Swan Hunter Group and in 1977 became part of the nationalised British Shipbuilders. In the same year the last vessel was launched and the site was sold off in 1984. Readheads was prolific and built over 600 ships from 1865 to 1968, including 87 vessels for the Hain Steamship Company Ltd and over forty for the Strick Line Ltd. The shipyard also built four ships for the Prince Line, founded by Sir James Knott. The firm built vessels, which were involved in the major conflicts of the Twentieth Century. During the First World War they built patrol vessels and ‘x’ lighters (motor landing craft used in the Gallipoli campaign) for the Admiralty. During the Second World War the firm built tankers for the Normandy Landings. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons.
