Eleanor Hull, full-length portrait seated in chair, in a garden with a book and a cane
Description: I like days like this, the weather is improving and there is a hint of Spring in the air. I also like photographs like this one in that I have no knowledge whatsoever of the subject and I know that by the end of the day I will have learned everything there is to learn about her.... .... And indeed I have been enlightened. This is unequivocally Eleanor Hull (1860-1935), writer, scholar and journalist. Born in the UK, she studied Irish history, language and folklore in Dublin. She was a co-founder of the Irish Texts Society and a president of the Irish Literary Society. The general consensus is that this image was likely captured in London - where she spent her later years. Perhaps in the late 1920s or early 1930s.... Darrell Figgis
Description: The name Darrell Figgis rings no bells for this Mary! I never heard of him before and have no idea what part he played in Irish Political life? Up to now the only Figgis I knew of was the bookshop, a heaven on Dawson Street where many happy hours were passed and purchases made. It is fitting however that this Figgis has a book tucked comfortably up under his oxter. What we learned about Darrell Figgis (1882–1925) today explained perhaps why some of us had not heard much about him. As an early member of the Irish Volunteers, a party to the Howth gun-running, an internee following the Rising and Anti-Conscription crackdown, a TD in the 3rd and 4th Dáil, and chair of the Constitution Committee, one might imagine Figgis was as notable as other early members of Sinn Féin. (Like Griffith, Collins, DeV, Brugha - about whom we know much more). However, as was perhaps not uncommon at that fractious time, Figgis fell-out with others in the new political landscape, and was subject to attack. Both physically and politically. A dapper figure in the early 1920s, in one attack, his detractors forcibly cut his trademark beard. Which perhaps helps date this image. A more tragic figure by the mid-1920s, following the deaths of the women in his life, Figgis took his own. A collection of his manuscripts was published after his death, and titled "Recollections of the Irish War".... Photographers: Various Collection: Irish Political Figures Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1917-1925. Likely after mid-1923 (beard attack). And before late-1925 (death). Bridging the gap
Description: The original title on this Hogan-Wilson image is "Bridge blown up - Unidentified location" and I suspect that it will not be easily identified today? No posters, doubtful 'Streetview' availability and few other clues so we will probably be down to newspaper articles? It is a pity that the shot is not sharper as any clues that might be there are dulled! While the image seems to date from the middle of the War of Independence (1919-1921), our intrepid contributors highlight the lack of debris in the picture - suggesting the image was taken some time after its destruction. While this might help eliminate any acts of sabotage from later in the conflict, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] tells us that there were many hundreds of such events on railway bridges alone. Making date an unlikely 'clue' to identify a location. The topography and make-up of the bridge however have suggested some possible leads..... Photographer: W. D. I.S. Varian & Co., brushmakers. North Dublin
Description: To finish off the week we make a visit to the Mason Collection. What a great variety of brushes, I wonder can we identify all the different uses? In the 1911 Census there are 337 people with "brush" as part of the description of their occupation. These included: Brush Maker, Brush Finisher, Brush Drawer, Brush Trade, Brush Manufacturer, Brush Washer, Brush Merchant, Brush Borer and Brush Traveler. While I'm not sure what a "Brush Traveler" may have done, does the "St Louis - 1904" signage suggest that these particular brushes went on a journey? This particular Mary must admit to knowing nothing of I.S Varian & Co, brushmakers - before today's researches that is. Particularly striking is the longevity of the business. First founded in Cork in 1798, the company was based from Dublin's Talbot Street since 1856 - and still operating from Walkinstown into the 21st century. They had upwards of 360 employees in the 1940s - some of whom continued an interesting employee renunion tradition on unique dates (4/4/1944, 5/5/1955, etc) - until recent decades. The other interesting thing (clearly) about the business were the displays of their wares. Including their display at the 1904 St Louis Worlds Fair. Given the mention of St Louis and 1904 in this particular display, it seems likely that (though probably not from the St Louis exhibition), our image dates from after this time. Perhaps 1904 - plus a few years..... Photographer: Thomas H. Mason Collection: Mason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Likely after c.1904. Michael Mallin : (Commandant Irish Republican Army) Executed May 8th, 1916
Description: This morning we have an image of one of the lesser known leaders, Michael Mallin of the Easter Rising in 1916. It was requested by one of our contributors, Dún Laoighaire Míchael. And it is Dún Laoghaire Micheál who lets us know that Dún Laoghaire rail station was named after Mallin on the 50th anniversary of his execution (although he wonders whether there was any connection that prompted this specifically). Other contributors, including Niall McAuley, BeachcomberAustralia and Bernard Healy advise that Mallin's son is the last surviving child of any of the participants executed after the Rising in 1916; Fr Joe Mallin is remaining active until very recently, at the age of 103... Horse drawn plough, Ring of Kerry
Description: Given the low response to yesterdays wonderful shot we may need to repost it later as we are obviously in the holiday season with our contributors away on leave? Today sees a rare visit to the Tilbrook collection and to the Ring of Kerry. In colour no less. This lovely image of a horse-drawn plough with the sun streaming down on the furrowed ground would lighten the heart and raise our hopes! It is appropriate in its own way as today the 2017 Dublin Horse Show begins - with all the excitement, activity and of course horses galore. I hope they have a great show! Thomas Ashe, half-length portrait
Description: A fine Keogh portrait of the man who was probably, militarily at least, the most successful and least celebrated 1916 leader! One thing we can be sure of is that the outer end of the date range on this will be changed! With thanks to today's contributors, it seems that this portrait of Thomas Ashe (dating to c.1914-1917 and part of a series published by Keogh brothers about the 1916 leadership) was widely used. There are examples of buttons and memorial plaques based upon it in the comment thread. The image also appears on the entry for Ashe (and his burial) at the Glasnevin Trust website. This entry describes that he died in 1917, from pnumonia and other complications (arising from his treatment, including forible feeding, while imprisoned at Mountjoy).... Photographer: Brendan Keogh Collection: Keogh Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1914-1923. But certainly before 1917 (date of death). Training Ship 'Wellesley' on fire at North Shields
Description: Postcard of the Training Ship 'Wellesley' on fire at North Shields, 11 March 1914 (TWAM ref. DX1305/1/1). The vessel was destroyed by the blaze. It served as an industrial school for destitute boys. The postcard is unused. This set celebrates the many postcards in our collections. The people, places and events they show can give us an insight into the past, documenting the landscape, the fashions, the way we lived. Some postcards are unused but others tell us something about the people who bought them, through the messages they wrote. They can give us a fascinating glimpse into people’s lives.
