Park Street, Dundalk, Co. Louth
Description: For today we have another street - surely the cataloguer can't have this one wrong as well? It is a fine street, in a busy town, with lots of commerce to provide plenty of research for those who would follow... ...and sure enough the team confirm that the label is correct. The discussion below focused mainly on the business serving a "pass trade" on the left side of the Park Street. And through that discussion it seems likely this is a mid-1920s view of its businesses, customers and signage. Devonshire Arms Hotel, Lismore, Co. Waterford
Description: We start November with a stay in the Devonshire Arms Hotel in Lismore, one of the most beautiful areas in Ireland. Rich with castles, trees and the beautiful Blackwater River - what better place to spend an Autumn day? With thanks to all for the contributions below, we learned that the hotel (now the Lismore House Hotel) dates from the 1790s, and the monumental fountain (the Ambrose Power Memorial) to the 1870s. When the picture itself was taken, and what the young chaps are up to is still the subject of some debate... Fair Day, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford
Description: A busy fair day in the south with many cattle for sale and plenty of men there to sell or to buy. The hand slapping is in full swing with deals being done and cows bought and sold. Thanks to all for the comments below - with a special mention for Niall McAuley who notes that building works completed in 1902, and certainly after a previous similar view, suggest a more refined date range of 1902-1914... People strolling and sunning themselves in a park (Phoenix Park)
Description: Labelled as "People strolling and sunning themselves in a park : location unknown", today's image took us from war to peace. Having seen the result of military reprisals yesterday, todays sylvan scene is a welcome change and shows gentlemen and ladies taking their ease. Thanks in part to the wonders of Streetview, but mostly to the work of sharon.corbet and derangedlemur, it has been established that this "unknown location" is the People's Garden in Dublin's Phoenix Park. Though still popular with those seeking a break from the city, and while the plinth remains, the statue we see pictured in the background (which assisted in confirming the location) was destroyed in the 1950s. So perhaps not such a quiet respite from conflict we hoped for after all.... Men with horse-drawn float at St. Stephen's Green
Description: Our final "Clarke Week" entry, and probably our last Clarke image for a while, keeps us on the capital's south side where men are readying a float. The phrase "float your boat" takes on different meaning here, and there's definitely a nautical theme, but we wondered what might be happening. While we initially focused on the possible lettering between the masts and questioned if a signal flag expert might help, sharon.corbet pointed-out that we overlooked a note in the catalogue entry which gives context:  Boat decorated with garlands etc. as part of an annual fund-raising flag day held by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution [....] Perhaps the event is held at a particular time of year, or always in the same spot - to help with date or location? There is an interesting article on recent conservation treatments over on our blog www.nli.ie/blog/ please have a look if you have the time. The full title of the article is Acidic patches to zombie whites – recent conservation treatments. Photographer: Clarke, J. J. Top hat and male
Description: Man with umbrella standing at the junction of Nassau Street, Grafton Street and Suffolk Street. The "Clarke Week" image for today (a little later than usual - apologies) is another candid streetlife shot from Dublin's south-side. The top-hatted gentleman looks to be standing on the corner (near Trinity's Provost House) looking towards Grafton Street. There appears to be an actual carriage or cart where Molly Malone's statued cart would later be sited... Niall McAuley identifies that Hamilton Long and J. M. Bernardo two businesses visible in the photo are amazingly still trading. As a bonus he tells us that one of the Bernardo sons Dr Tomas John founded the Bernardo Charity! Niall also helped us narrow the date range a little. As our regulars already know, we will claim a "people identified tag" at the drop of a fez. That said, the Duke of Edinburgh, Rt. Hon. Joseph Chamberlain, M.P. and Lady Augusta Bracknell, might be seen as stretching that point a little too far. stephen_corkery Links to one of his own "then and now" version of this photo, see the link below. Group of boys in uniform marching at the corner of Portobello and Richmond Street South
Description: Continuing with "Clarke Week" (not to be confused with Discovery channel's "Shark Week"), today's candid shot prompts questions about where these youngsters were off to. A number of theories were offered on who the boys might be, and perhaps the most likely is [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]]'s suggestion that they are associated with the Hibernian Marine School which was located for a time in nearby Rathmines. While we'd absolutely love to corroborate this (perhaps with another image of the school's pupils of uniforms), in the meantime we note that the building pictured was originally a hotel, as per the following from our friends at Archiseek:  The hotel was one of five operated between Dublin and the Shannon and opened in 1807 and operated until 1860 despite passenger services being stopped in 1852. Sited beside the former Portobello basin (now filled in), this is a simple classical building with nice proportions. The hotel was later converted into a nursing home where the artist Jack B. Yeats spent his last years. Photographer: Clarke, J. J. The Colony, Achill
Description: Sounding a little ominous (perhaps somewhere Patrick McGoohan might have spent some time), today we visit "The Colony" on Achilll island. Depending on when French captured this image, it's likely that Nangle's mission was all but closed by this time.... Sharon.corbet links us to a history of "The Colony" which gives us the following:  The land on which the Achill colony was built was leased from the island’s landlord, Sir Richard O’Donnell, and was located near the village of Dugort, under the shadow of Achill’s highest mountain, Slieve Mór. Edward Nangle moved permanently to the completed colony in 1834, along with his wife Eliza, his family, and his most loyal supporters. The missionary settlement consisted of male and female schools, the minister’s house, a church, a hotel, and a printing press. We can also see two Dogs at the main gate which will keep some of our regulars happy! This photo was selected by Flickr Explore - check out our explore album if you have a few spare moments. Northern Bank, Mohill, Co. Leitrim
Description: Another building for today with a unique design for a bank. While we haven't been able to refine the date range significantly, there's a suggestion that the lady tending the window boxes (yes - there she is over the door on the flat roof) is a member of the household of William Charles Smith, who was manager of the branch in the early 20th century. We also learn that the building's Art Nouveau architecture was possibly designed by W.H. Byrne or Godfrey William Ferguson, and dates to c.1905 (plus or minus a few years)... S.S. Dunbrody stranded in Avon
Description: To matters maritime to begin the week, a stranded ship on a shore with supporting craft around it. With thanks to sharon.corbet, guliolopez, swordscookie, Derek, patrick.vickers1 and B-59, it seems that this image (probably a later copy by Poole) shows the 1896 grounding of the SS Dunbrody on the River Avon in England. The ship was refloated during Christmas 1896, and continued to service the Waterford Steamship Company's route from Bristol to Waterford into the early 20th century. If we can refine the location a little, we'd love to pin a location for this on the map.... Photographer: A.H. Church, Arranmore, Aran Islands, Co. Galway
Description: From yesterday's luxurious properties to the spartan settings of the Aran Islands at the turn of the last century. With thanks to derangedlemur, O Mac, DannyM8, and in particular Mike (Inverarra), we have additional detail on the location and destiny of this little church. "Eaglais San Thomáis" (the church of Saint Thomas) served the Anglican/COI community in Kilthomas from the 1840s to the 20th century. As per the images and "potted history" which Mike shares, the church is now a ruin, and the roof was removed in the mid-20th century. While likely mirroring an overall decline in the island's population (from ~2500 when the church opened in the 1840s, to ~800 in the 2011 census), it's worth noting that there are three churches still serving the island's community: Kilronan RC (dating from 1905), Eochaill chapel (1833) and Eoghanacht church (1958). Thanks again all! View of some of the Stalls at the Show, Ballsbridge, Co. Dublin
Description: From one venerable Irish institution, Rebellion, to another, the Royal Dublin Society. This image is of the main hall at the RDS during either the Spring or Horse Show in the early 20th century. The comments below offer interesting insights into the exhibitors and, importantly for us, a more refined date range for the photo. Thanks to all - and in particular Carol Maddock whose investigations into the stand-holders and numbers would seem to establish a date or dates. We've updated the range for the entry (on Flickr at least for now), and mapped the image to the RDS Ballsbridge exhibition centre main hall. Bell Bridge (Bealaclugga Bridge) County Clare
Description: Robert French took a few shots of this striking early 19th century bridge near Spanish Point in Clare (Miltown Malbay per the catalogue entry). Given that this was likely a famine relief project, the effort that went into the ornamentation is interesting. While the loopholes are fanciful, do we think the apparent coats-of-arms have meaning? beachcomberaustralia and guliolopez tell us that this bridge was built as part of famine relief works, I think most of us would immediately presume 1840's but no, this bridge was built in 1822. There was famine in certain western areas and as can be seen from the following quote thousands of people were involved in schemes like this. "A striking feature of the public works initiative in Ireland was the sheer physical demand placed on the framework by the vast numbers seeking relief. In July 1822, Griffiths reported there being ‘upwards of 10,000 persons at present employed in the County Limerick exclusive of farming laborers, mainly on road building" Photographer: French, Robert (1841-1917) Contributors: Lawrence, William (1840-1932) Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: ca. 1865-1914 NLI Ref: L_ROY_11323 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Octagon, Westport, County Mayo
Description: For many towns a four-sided square is sufficient. Not so for the "planned town" of Westport - where norms are doubled to form "the Octagon". The octagonal monument in the centre was originally erected in the mid-19th century in memory of a wealthy local - a decade or so ahead of the first date in our catalogue's "1865-1914" range. But we wondered whether we could refine the date range for this Lawrence/French shot. That the statue still had a head and appeared unaffected by damage that beachcomberaustralia noted confirmed that the image likely didn't exceed the late 1910s. However, our eagle-eyed sleuths were able to refine further. sharon.corbet was quick to point out that the distant spire put the earliest date in the 1870s. O Mac PRO suggested that the electric lights might imply an early 20th-century date - and this seems to have been confirmed by a "1902" date in the graffiti spotted by beachcomberaustralia (and corroborated by Niall McAuley and derangedlemur). Ultimately through the community's efforts we have learned that the monument did succumb to various attempts, and the original statue of George Glendenning (1770-1843) was replaced by one of St Patrick in the late 20th century... Photographer: French, Robert (1841-1917) Contributors: Lawrence, William (1840-1932) Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Listed as ca. 1865-1914 (but likely ca. 1902) NLI Ref: L_ROY_07558 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Swiss Cottage, Cahir, Co. Tipperary
Description: What a lovely photograph to start the week. A delightful "cottage orné" built in the early 1800s by Richard Butler, 1st Earl of Glengall to a design by the famous Regency architect John Nash. Its interior contains a graceful spiral staircase and some elegantly decorated rooms. The wallpaper in the Salon manufactured by the Dufour factory is one of the first commercially produced Parisian wallpapers. Situated on an elevated site with access by stone steps. The above is from the link to Heritage Ireland posted by sharon.corbet . O Mac PRO supplied all the required mapping information. His Streetview link is worth a look.. Everything was proceeding quietly until we heard the dreaded "Accidental Death Klaxon" Thank you Carol Maddock. This was accompanied by a chilling story of the death of Mr Peter Doherty in tragic circumstances. Mr Doherty was the caretaker of the Swiss cottage at that time. Our great Australian contributor beachcomberaustralia Links us to a story from an Aussie visitor to the area in 1910, see below. The Quays, Wicklow, Co. Wicklow
Description: To finish this week we turn to matters maritime! The quays in Wicklow as we could only imagine them. That wee ship is a nice neat vessel and obviously well cared for OR brand spanking new? Niall McAuley Was working overtime today, he supplied all the required mapping information and manages to convincingly narrow the date range to between 1905 and 1912. patrick.vickers1 knows the river here very well and tells us "The berth shown is where the an old Brixham schooner used to be. Perhaps better known as the Susan Vittery, ex Brooklands. A record holder on the fruit run from the Azores, sunk in a gale in 1953 near the Tuskar. When the tide was going down my grandfather and others use to rake for mussels on the lower arches of the river. The scene shown does not look much different than seventy years ago ! Belvelly Castle, Fota, Co. Cork
Description: For our Cork supporters today we have an old and very clear shot of the castle at the bridge from Fota. This shot generated a number of good stories today - leaving us with a tough job to select the most interesting ones. With thanks to all of today's contributors, without your help and support we would be at nothing: sharon.corbet, Niall McAuley, beachcomberaustralia, Carol Maddock + guliolopez. Ultimately perhaps Carol's "Blarney Castle" story wins by a whisker :) Even though Carol's find refers to events during WWI, Beachcomber references a similar story from 1904 - you would have to be up early in the morning to best the jarvies! Found this headed A Counterfeit Castle in Quidnunc’s An Irishman’s Diary... During the war [WWI] Queenstown, with its magnificent harbour, was the naval base for the American Fleet “operating in European waters”. Consequently, the town was constantly crowded with sailors on “shore leave”. Cork City was out of bounds, and the people of Queenstown were hard put to it to provide entertainment for these warriors of the sea. Now Blarney Castle proper stands about 21 miles from Queenstown, too long a journey for a horse to do in an afternoon, so the enterprising jarveys of the district evolved a scheme which brought much diversion to the Yankees and a golden harvest to themselves. Fortunately for that scheme, the American sailor is not of so inquiring a mind as his countrymen of the tourist class. About two miles from Queenstown there stands an old ruin, Belvelly Castle. Structurally, it is somewhat similar to Blarney Castle, sufficiently so, at any rate, to deceive the sailor from overseas. And here he was brought in dozens to see the Castle and kiss the Stone! I once inquired from a jarvey which stone they represented to be the famous one. “Yerra, anyone at all, sir, as long as ’twas a bit hard to git at”, he replied. “Most of them stones round the top have had their share. Shure, there’s bits of chewing-gum stuck all over them”. Thus was this complete, but harmless, deception successfully carried out. Queen's Square, Fermoy, Co. Cork
Description: Queens Square in Fermoy with that fine bridge across the Blackwater dominating the shot. While location and subject of this French shot were already clear, we lacked a more refined date range. Rising almost solo to the challenge, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley]'s detective work suggests that the date range could be refined to 1900 +/- between 3 to 5 years. Thanks also to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnspooner], [https://www.flickr.com/photos/vab2009], and others for the extra info and context on the image. Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue date c.1865-1914 (though likely c.1897-1903) NLI Ref: L_ROY_07217 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
