Old Cross, Sligo
Description: From the delights of Woodstown in Waterford and wasp waisted women to ancient artifacts and abodes in Sligo! This fine celtic cross appears to have been beautifully decorated, and is positioned with a tower in the background. Some great vertical lines in the shot. Is it still standing and in that location? Even though this image may have been mirrored in the scanning/digitising process, BeachcomberAustralia and Rory_Sherlock quickly and concurrently identified this as Drumcliffe, County Sligo. Where there are a number of high crosses. And, apparently Sligo's only round tower. Poet William Butler Yeats is buried only a few paces away..... Renaissance Residence as Rustic Rural Retreat?
Description: A visit to the Mason Collection today and to a very fancy "Hatters Castle" type dwelling in County Westmeath. While it looks formidable those windows and doors probably indicate that it was never intended to repel anything other than the weather. Is it still standing and where is/was it? sharon.corbet raises interesting points. Firstly she thinks that this photo is reversed and I am inclined to agree with her. Secondly she believes this photo is some form of a cropped (and reversed) version of L_CAB_03197 and again we fully accept her proposition. The above points do beg the question as to the relationships between the different photographers, why? how? does Mason end up with a Lawrence generated negative? sharon.corbet DannyM8 O Mac Niall McAuley BeachcomberAustralia I think it is a dog and he/she has moved before L_CAB_03198 was snapped. Sitting in splendid isolation?
Description: The statue of some cleric sitting in splendid isolation in St. Mary's Cathedral in Limerick City to begin the week. Last week we visited the beautiful county of Clare and today we go east to the gateway to the Shannon and the spiritual home of Rugby on the island of Ireland. The main learnings from today's photo concern the three memorials pictured:  • Centre is a statue of John Webb (bishop; 1775–1833) which was sculpted by Edward Hodges Baily in 1836.  • Right is a memorial to Thomas Summerfield (major; c.1767-1833) which was commissioned by his fellow officers, and  • Left is a memorial to George Tierney (merchant; d.1788) placed by his nephew following a bequest to the church in which it stands. In terms of dating this image, Niall McAuley offers a well-consider suggestion that it was captured prior to some renovation works (in this corner of the cathedral) which completed around 1880.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Castle on the hay covered hill
Description: This beautifully restored(?) castle set in a field of early cut hay is this offering from the Stereo Pairs Collection. When you think how old these images are the quality and clarity is just remarkable. Where is it and what does it look like now? With thanks to sharon.corbet we got answers to both of these questions. The first answer (where?) is that this is Kilwaughter Castle, an early 19th century mansion close to Larne, County Antrim. The second answer (look like now?) is that it doesn't look so great. Seized during WWII, it fell into ruin from the 1950s onwards, and barely a shell remains. There does however seem to be a campaign to see it restored.... Charabanc at the Lake Hotel
Description: This delightful shot shows a "Charabanc" or "Omnibus" loading up with happy trippers outside the Lake Hotel in Inchigeela, County Cork. The image is full of detail including hats, horses, people - but any dogs? As evidenced by the modern Flickr view highlighted by BeachcomberAustralia, and the modern StreetView shared by Niall McAuley, while the traffic in Inchigeela has changed, the businesses on view have not changed too much. Indeed, even the signage (for the Cyclist's Touring Club on the guest house, and Murphy's sign on the public house) has similar equivalents today. It is these original/older signs which help date the image - to perhaps the late 1890s or 1900s.... NOT a
Description: While this is NOT the exterior of a Gothic revival/restoration stone church it just may be the interior of just such a church. This appears to be one of a number of images of the same church in the archive. This one shows a beautifully clean, tidy and empty church all ready for Sunday service but where is it? There was mighty craic with the image last Friday and may I apologise to all our Cork brethren for suggesting that their beautiful city is naught but a "hamlet" :-) And today's image is from no small hamlet either - but Down Cathedral in Downpatrick. (Which [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] told us with lightening speed - before our morning coffee had cooled! Description: A visit to the Stereo Pairs Collection today and to a country church(?) with "square tower of rubble masonry". The shot has been reduced to a single image for ease of viewing on Flickr. In the past we have been able to identify places and times by the tombstones but I am not sure the detail is there on this one. While we'd originally titled this with a line from Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, ("The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep"), Niall McAuley schooled us that, technically, a hamlet (almost by definition) is a settlement that doesn't have a church. Shortly afterwards, based on cues and clues that hinted at a Cork based location, and in particular a similarly titled reverse view, sissonni established this as the "old" St Finbarre's Cathedral in Cork. As it was demolished and replaced, by William Burges, from 1865, we know that this image must have been captured before then.... Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883. Callow Hill, Roundwood, Co. Wicklow
Description: Having assumed that yesterday's "location unknown" image would keep everyone busy for a few days (how wrong I was), I hadn't really prepared anything for today. And hence have not taken the time to investigate the background to today's offering. Presumably however the "Vartry" reference in the image connects it with the Vartry reservoir and water works of the mid-19th century.... Based on extensive inputs from abandoned railways, sharon.corbet, BeachcomberAustralia, O Mac and in particular Niall McAuley we learned a lot about both the inanimate and human subjects of this shot. Put simply, based on the OSI maps, similar catalogue images, census records and related publications, this tank is indeed part of the Vartry reservoir and works. Not only that, but it is 99% certain that the people pictured are Murtagh Geoghegan, Mary Geoghegan and one of their sons (Thomas, Patrick or John). This family lived at the nearby and aptly named "Tank House", with Murtagh acting as caretaker of this part of the water works. While John Gray was commemorated with a statue on O'Connell Street for his efforts in bringing fresh water and improved conditions to Dublin's citizens, we're delighted to acknowledge the contribution of the Geoghegan family ourselves today :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Railway Station House, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow
Description: Back when railway stations were designed with a sense of style and purpose, this confection was landed in Bagenalstown in County Carlow. The symmetrical design was to cater for the vast flow of passengers in and out - though they had departed by the time this shot was taken. However, careful examination will show that a couple of special passengers are making their way to the right hand entrance and near the left there is a d..... We learned that this station, together with several other "picturesque gothic" stations in Ireland, was designed by English architect Sancton Wood. Though closed for a period in the late 20th century, Muine Bheag (Bagnalstown) station is since reopened and is a "halt" on the Dublin to Waterford line..... Woodstown, water, white wall and wasp waist!
Description: This lovely shot from the Poole Collection of the beach at Woodstown, County Waterford has a number of attractions. Soft sand, boys making sand castles, fish traps in the distance, a beached boat and a lady with an impossibly narrow waist. Confirmed to have been taken at Woodstown Strand, the consensus is that at least some of those pictured may be members of the Poole family. Perhaps on holiday or a day-out from the busy photography studio in Waterford. Maybe around 1900 or so.... Photographer: A. H. Go west young man, go west!
Description: Killala Bay, Kilcummin, Co. Mayo looking pristine with a sharp horizon line is todays offering from the Lawrence Collection. Given the size of Killala Bay this could be looking North, South, East or West and we could still have such an horizon but no doubt the cartographers among you will have the shot properly oriented in jig time? Today's contributors point-out that the main difference between this image and the modern StreetView is that Kilcummin's stone pier/breakwater has not yet been built. There is evidence that this may have been constructed after c.1893, and likely before c.1898 - when a plaque commemorating a French landing in 1798 was seemingly unveiled. This event was (somewhat unusually) marked on the historic OSI maps, along with a label identifying these cottages as part of the local coastguard station. The eagle-eyed amongst our Flickroonies also note that some of the men pictured are wearing coastguard uniforms. By the late 19th century these men were likely more on the lookout for troubled fishingboats than for French invaders..... A hive of activity - Main Street, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary
Description: It's a long way from Tipperary South Riding and Cashel to Tipperary North Riding and Roscrea but only if you are trying to walk it! We started the week with a visit to Cashel of the Kings and here we have the Main Street of Roscrea of the Abbeys! This beautiful royal plate from Mr. French shows a scene of great activity, a public fountain and a mysterious building in the middle of the highway. I wonder what can help us to date the shot even if we cannot identify any of the donkeys? While we couldn't identify the beasts of burden, the burgeoning businesses seemingly help date this image to before c.1901. The fantastic fountain still stands apparently - though moved to nearby Rosemary Square. The marvelous and mysterious market house however did not survive the 1920s - perhaps unsurprising given its placement in the "middle of the road" and the coming of the motor car by then..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Definitely after c.1886 (central building). Pier, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare
Description: We stay in County Clare and with the Lawrence Collection for the last photo of the week. For a while, Ballyvaughan was the official capital of this region of Clare, sporting its own workhouse, coastguard station and a large police barracks. The small boat on the left looks like a Galway Hooker to me, what do you think? Almost single handedly, B-59 helped refine the range, identify a key subject, and pinpoint the location. The date (previously a 50 year catalogue range from the 1860s to 1910s) is likely to be between the mid-1890s and early-1910s. This is based on the fact that the main identified subject (the steamer S.S. Duras) seemingly ran cargo and passenger services to this per (confirmed as at Ballyvaughan, Co Clare) from after 1893 to before 1912. Thanks B-59! Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Drumcliffe, Co. Clare
Description: What a lovely day for a visit to the Banner County. Spring seems to have sprung in this Emerald Isle of ours. I have seen cattle in grassy (and reasonably dry) fields, apple trees with buds ready to bloom and yesterday I saw my first swallow of the year. There is something charming about the swallow and its life cycle. I read recently that in the old days people believed that the swallow lived in underwater hibernation over the course of the winter. Perhaps some of the Flat Earthers still believe! Nothing substantial known here about this photo, so over to you..... Niall Sisson helpfully points us to entries in the often useful Megalithic Ireland website for the Drumcliff Round Tower and Church. Niall number two (or is it number one), Niall McAuley, similarly helped with the mapping and dating - noting that other images in this possible series may date to c.1880/1890s. BeachcomberAustralia also confirms that this was likely the very late summer - given the haystack in view. Finally (and sadly) [https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnspooner] points us to a contemporary report which explains the fate of the ancient round tower. Incredibly an ignorant road builder blew it up for raw materials :( ....... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Fairy Rings and Flagpoles.
Description: They're not Fairy Rings of course, but rather enclosures to keep the sheep from eating the plants? To start the week we visit Valentia in Co. Kerry once again and this time to "Glenleam" and what appears to be an hotel or guesthouse. Mr. French appears to have been blessed with sunshine on his visits to the island and got some lovely images of that place at that time. This cabinet sized shot was taken after a trek it seems as he seemed to prefer Royals when he was on ground level! Our intrepid contributors tell us that Glanleam House and Glanleam Gardens are still open to visitors. And, though originally built in the late 18th century, still owe much of their current layout to Peter George Fitzgerald, 'Knight of Kerry', who the gardens in the early to mid 19th century..... Quays, Derry City, Co. Derry
Description: Staying in Ulster again to end the week and today visiting the lovely city of Derry on the banks of the Foyle! The Quays have shipping tied up - but it does not look like a hive of activity. Looking at the timbers on the quay it is most likely that a lot has changed in the interim? With thanks to all the usual incredible contributions in the comments, we've been able to map this location accurately. And refine the near 50-year catalogue range to perhaps a 15-year range between the mid-1890s and early 1910s. The latter is possible because of the vessels visible. The smaller vessel, nearest the photographer, is the Screw Steamer 'Harrier'. Built in 1892, she was torpedoed in 1943 (by u-boat U181). The larger steamer, just beyond, is the Packet Steamer 'Duke of York'. Built in 1894, she was renamed the 'Peel Castle' in 1911/1912, and pressed-into service as an Armoured Boarding Vessel during WWI. While the subjects on the leftside of this image are gone forever, it's worth noting that at least some of the focus from the rightside (including the city's Guildhall tower) remain as they were.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Definitely after c.1894 (Duke of York steamship came into service). And before c.1912 (Duke of York renamed). NLI Ref: L_ROY_02563 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Bloody Bridge, Newcastle, Co. Down
Description: From the top of Donard to below the Bloody Bridge and still in Newcastle, Co. Down! This looks like a major engineering achievement, not because of the size of the bridge or the fury of the torrent below it, but rather because of the rugged terrain? A beautiful scene and I look forward to seeing it in full living colour. As well as providing several images of this bridge in glorious colour, today's contributors (and Wikipedia) tell us of the origins of this bridge and its name. Also described by in the 'Visit Mourne Mountains' website, the bridge is a landmark in the area. Together with the Bloody Bridge River (evidently a 'spate' river which fluctuates widely from a trickle to a torrent), the bridge takes its name from the killing of prisoners at the bridge during the 1641 rebellion.... Steeple, sun, shadows, skirts and Siezer the dog!
Description: This beautiful Eason shot of Rathgar at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries features the steeple of the Presbyterian "Christchurch" and a whole world of other detail! I love the fact that the vast majority of the people on view are ladies and girls! Electric trams but no motor cars might provide some clue as to the date but I could sit here all day and enjoy it. The general consensus is that this is after 1900 (electrified trams, fashions) and before 1920 (lack of cars, businesses visible, etc). Of the businesses visible, those on the left of the street (Heffernan's grocers and wine merchants at no.108 and Perry's fruiters at no.106) had a presence from the late 1890s through to at least the mid-1910s. Others (like Hanlon's butchers at no.107) seem to have been later arrivals - but apparently a fixture until the mid-1920s at least. Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Probably after c.1901 (tram electrification). Perhaps c.1910 (fashions/businesses) NLI Ref: EAS_1918 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Group of people near the place where Kevin Barry was captured
Description: Keven Barry was arrested on 20th September 1920, are we dealing with a contemporary photo or one taken after the event, the Catalogue date of 1921 would suggest the latter? The general consensus is that this may have been taken some time after the events of 20 September 1920. Whether a few hours later, days later, or longer, the consensus is that more immediate contemporaneous photos (like this one) suggest a busier scene in the immediate aftermath. That this is the spot, on the corner of North King Street and Church Street, is confirmed however.... Photographer: W. D. Hogan Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection Date: Catalogue date c.1921. Who lives in a Fairy Castle?
Description: Yet again we have a case of deja vu! We seem to have seen aspects of this estate in the past though not the castle itself. A renaissance style castle set in the North of Ireland must have seemed pretty pretentious to the sober, hard working northern folk? To all our many supporters and contributors on this Photostream we the three Marys and all at Library towers wish you a very happy St. Patricks Day. To the Ireland team who take on England in a Grand Slam decider tomorrow we say COME ON IRELAND Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia, sharon.corbet, and Niall McAuley for quickly identifying that this isn't strictly a castle - but the 19th century Scottish Baronial architecture of Helen's Bay railway station in County Down. John Spooner also suggests that, unlike other stereopairs that he's helpfully "3d-ified" this image isn't an entirely true stereo image. Apparently both sides are identical..... Eglington Buildings and Claddagh Rings (Dillons), Galway City, Co. Galway
Description: On the first day on our search for the next 60 million views we have this lovely Eason image of the heart of Galway city. Galway is such a picturesque and welcoming place and this area is the beating heart of the city itself. The Claddagh Ring is synonymous with the county and has been explored here in the past. We were reminded today that we've visited this corner of William St and Eglinton St before - though perhaps not amongst the same crowds evident in this 2017 StreetView. The general consensus is that this image dates to perhaps the mid/late 1920s. Or even the early 1930s. At 1 in the afternoon. The Giants Ring in Kenmare
Description: To the Lawrence Collection this morning and to "The Giants Ring", Kenmare, Co. Kerry. It is not easy to pick it out due to the more modern construction dominating the foreground but there appears to be a ring of ancient stones as the feature? As Niall McAuley points out, the construction date of Kenmare Stone Circle itself (c.2500-1000 BC) doesn't really help with dating this image :) Niall's investigations on the nearby/visible houses however suggest that this image dates from after 1874. Helping narrow the catalogue range by a decade (to c.1874-1914). The lime kiln, on the left, was apparently part of a nearby quarry. The more modern landscaping and planting around the circle give it a much more lush and enclosed feel today... Clonhugh, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath
Description: From the moving statue of King Billy to a big, a very big, house outside Mullingar in County Westmeath. This large building with extensions looks like yet another country house converted into a convent or school. Am I right? Morning Mary I have to tell you you are wrong! Within minutes Niall McAuley told us that the house is currently a private dwelling. Messers French and Lawrence are also incorrect with their spelling, it is in fact Clonhugh not Clonugh as on the face of the photograph. I love the story posted by BeachcomberAustralia from 1891, under the heading DOG BITES LORD GREVILLE Lord Greville, I am sorry to learn, was bitten the other day by a dog at Clonhugh, his lordship's seat in County Westmeath. The popular peer left Ireland immediately, and travelled "right away" to Paris, there to place himself under the care of M. Pasteur. By this time I hope he is completely cured........ We are presuming that he visited the one and only Louis Pasteur who discovered pasteurisation and also developed a vaccination for anthrax and rabies, again we are presuming the rabies jabs were the object of the dash to Paris by Lord Greville. Tennis Court (with slight obstruction) in Boyle
Description: Back to the old reliable Lawrence Collection today and a visit to the beautiful town of Boyle in County Roscommon. Titled "Tennis Court, Boyle" this image appears to be more about the statue than the tennis court in the background but don't let the truth get in the way of a good story :-) And indeed it was/is a good story. This statue, of King William III, had been moved to this location (from a nearby bridge) in the early 19th century. As with other memorials to King Billy, it suffered several defacements, before being entirely removed entirely before the 1930s. The general consensus is that this image dates to before 1905 - when the statue was seemingly beheaded. The pedestal remains, and is a landmark in the surrounding parkland and "Boyle pleasure grounds".... Description: The cataloguer may not have had the benefit of super zoomability as we do, and so perhaps did not highlight the castle nestling among the trees. At first viewing I thought that this might confound us, but that huge keep may make this easier than expected. Where is it and is it still standing? Rory_Sherlock was quick to confirm the location of this shot. It was undoubtedly taken from the garden of Rockmount House looking eastwards towards Castle Howard in County Wicklow. Both residences are located in the Vale of Avoca, close to the "meeting of the waters" on the Avonbeg river. It seems that both are, indeed, still standing. If the lawn or Rockmount House is still set up for tennis, one imagines it didn't get much use during the unprecendented March snow this week..... The Tomb of King Connor, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon
Description: On a day when history repeats itself, Ireland has 3 inches of snow and slows to a dead stop we have the tomb of King Connor (whoever he was) and perhaps a little bit of real history. And the history of this tomb/effigy is as interesting as it is ancient. Feidlim Ua Conchobair (Fedhlim O'Connor) was King of Connacht from 1233 to 1265, and founded the the Dominican Priory of St. Mary in Roscommon - where this memorial remains. Apart from (apparently) some missing pieces, it is remarkably well preserved after nearly 800 years. One wonders what he would have made of the 'magic' that allows for a 3D model of his memorial.... Top Hats, Trilbys and Bowlers
Description: A fine image from the Poole Collection of a wedding group commissioned by Mr. Cornelius Phelan, Kilganey House, Clonmel! The ladies in their finery including necklaces, fur stoles and hats are matched by the gentlemen, both reverend and lay, with top hats, trilbys and bowler hats. While most of the apparel appear to be rather somber, the young lady gives a splash of light and colour to the group! While -unusually- we have not yet established the details of the wedding party, ofarrl suggests a location: the garden alongside the Grand Hotel in Tramore. This is corroborated by other contributors, the StreetView, and the front-doors in the background.... Photographer: A. H. We finally got to Hollywood, hurrah! (Actually it is Holywood but nearly...)
Description: Holywood, County Down is a great place to visit on this morning after the BAFTAs - given that they frequently indicate who might win the Oscars! Holywood looks pristine in this lovely cabinet sized shot. But how has it fared in the meantime? Seemingly, in the meantime, much of the streetscape from this image has changed. In fact, without the church in the distance, and the wall in the right foreground, it may have been difficult to place. However, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] has suggested(with corroberation from others) that this image is taken from under the railway arch on Holywood's Esplanade. The houses pictured, at Marine Parade, are all but gone. Even the lagoon which takes up much of this picture was filled-in and built-over. Only the spire (or indeed the lack of one) on the distant church helps with dating - suggesting that this image was taken after the church of St Colmcille was built (1872-1874) but before its spire was added (1888-1890).... The Queen's Yacht but not in Queenstown?
Description: The Queens Yacht at anchor (it is affixed to a buoy which means that it is moored not anchored) with what looks like its twin in the background. As Queenstown was the name given to Cobh in Co. Cork and this looks nothing like Cobh it is safe to say that this is not Queenstown! This lovely, crisp Royal plate from the Lawrence collection shows the detail of the ship to perfection. What seems surprising is the number of small boats in close proximity, herself was not that fond of mixing with the peasants? With confirmation that this is not Queenstown, and as derangedlemur notes, is actually/ironically Kingstown, we have mapped this image to the harbor at Dún Laoghaire. In terms of date, given that this "version" of the royal yacht was superseded by a newer vessel in 1901, it seems plausible that this image dates to a royal visit in 1900.... A very rare visit to County Longford
Description: This is a rare visit to the county of Longford and the pity is that it shows two institutional buildings rather than the many fine sights there! The Convent of Mercy beside the Union building on a rise must have been dominating the town for many years. Not as difficult to locate as the bombed out bridge of last week but it will be nice to see what has changed here in the meantime? Our interpid detectives have confirmed that the changes in the meantime include the addition of an extra wing to the convent building, and the demolition of the workhouse buildings themselves (on the right). The general consensus is that image was captured no more than a few years after the building of the convent (c.1892) - given the condition, unfilled statue niches, and saplings in the garden.... Lighthouse, Carrigaholt, Co. Clare
Description: From a traffic blockage in Clonmel to Carrigaholt where the nearest thing to a traffic jam is two cows meeting at a crossroads! Mr. French appears to have discovered rush hour at the famous lighthouse at Loop Head with people posing and using parasols and even a telescope! I wonder did Robert French manage to get the quartet to pose like that for him? While we're still none-the-wiser as to whether Mr French posed this group, or they struck a pose on their own accord, it is the group (and their spy glasses and parasols) that make this shot :) The lighthouse is no less interesting a subject however. We learned today that Kilcredaun Lighthouse was built in 1827, and operated by the Comissioners of Irish Lights for nearly 190 years - until its closure in recent years. The light topping the tower itself, and some of the buildings surrounding, were changed over the years - including more notable works in the 1930s and 40s.... Castle or traffic obstruction - Clonmels dilemma?
Description: This old gate to the town of Clonmel which once controlled traffic entering and leaving must have become a true bottleneck with the recent proliferation of motor cars and heavy traffic? At the time this photograph was taken however it does not appear to have been too much of a problem. Thank you all for yesterdays contributions on Main Street, Tipperary, it was very enlightening! Thanks also for the contributions on today's image. Focusing mainly on the date, the suggestion is that it was captured in the first decade or so of the catalogue range (perhaps after 1905, or into the 1910s). Certainly the NIAH entry on the gate itself doesn't help - in that it confirms it was built 100 years prior to this capture. St. Helens Bridge, Crawfords Burn
Description: Having spent some time recently down in the sunny South East, or over in beautiful Sligo, it seems appropriate that we visit the wee North. This fine manorial style bridge looks a formidable crossing over a very minor road. Given that, even 100 years ago it was overgrown, how does it look today? While still somewhat overgrown, as evidenced by the contemporary Flickr shots linked from the comments, we are at least delighted that this striking bridge still stands. Today's contributors tell us that this bridge was built, along with the nearby Helen's Bay Railway Station in the 1860s. Designed by architect Benjamin Ferrey, the project was bankrolled by Frederick Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, 1st Marquess of Dufferin and Ava, whose lands the line traversed. Wanted Dead or Alive
Description: Another visit to Sligo Town but with a very different view and skyline to that of our visit to "The Quays"! With the detritus of a recent market lying about it doesn't look very attractive but Sligo - the town and especially the county are much underrated! The welcome is warm, the scenery is stunning and the food is first class. But who is wanted and why? Several contributors pointed-out that we've visited this stretch of Market Street before, and had dated the statue (which replaced this lamppost) to c.1899. Putting this image before that date. In terms of the subject of the "Wanted" poster, the general consensus is that its a tailoring business (Clinchy's) who are seeking journeymen tailors. With "several good men" wanted.... Description: A beautiful Royal plate of the Waterfall at Poulaphouca, Co. Wicklow. Over the years I have been in that area many times but have never seen this so perhaps it has been inundated? While not inundated, today's contributors and the relevant Wikipedia article tell us that the Poulaphouca waterfall was largely reduced to a trickle following the nearby reservoir works. Thankfully however the impressive looking bridge remains :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914 NLI Ref: L_ROY_02532 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Edermine, Co. Wexford
Description: Unusually for a Lawrence Royal plate this image is not quite tack sharp, but it does have a hazy beauty and suggestion "other times" to it! Edermine in County Wexford would appear to be a very big house with wonderful greenhouses for plant growth. I will be following the stream with interest to learn what I can about it! And what we learned, thankfully, is that everything here is still standing - and occupied. Edermine House itself was built c.1840 by John Benjamin Keane, the central chapel built c.1860 to designs by Augustus Pugin, and the magnificent greenhouse also c.1860 by James Pierce. It seems plausible that the Talbot Powers were the resident family enjoying the gardens around the time of this photo. After hosting refugee monks 100 years ago, it now remains in private hands... Meet Moate's Main Street - from the west!
Description: Moate, Co. Westmeath has a long and noble main street and it is well captured in this fine Eason shot! We have some of the usual suspects standing about but for me the pose of the man about to climb onto the cart is BIZ! There are no shortage of chimney pots on view and I am sure turf/peat was the staple diet for the fireplaces thereabouts. Given that the location of this image was pretty unequivocal, much of the discussion on its subject focused on the buildings and businesses which are visible. And, based on the adverts visible (including the Morganol Lubricants signage), it seems likely we are after c.1908. Also, given that we don't seem to see this memorial cross outside the courthouse, we are likely before c.1925..... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Likely c.1908-1925. Possibly late 1910s-early 1920s. Donnacomper, Celbridge, Co. Kildare
Description: On this Monday we present a fine Lawrence shot of Donnacomper. What can you tell us about it? And the main things that our contributors "told us about" were the house/estate, and the lads (in the cart) by its back-door :) On the estate, we learned that Donaghcumper House was built in the late 18th century (1770s), and significantly remodeled in Tudor Revival style in the 19th century (1830s) .It was primarily associated with the Kirkpatrick family. On the lads in the cart, the consensus is that they are members of the extended Kirkpatrick family. And, while several other Kirkpatrick "cousins" are possible, it seems plausible that the boys in the cart are the sons of Elizabeth Mary Kirkpatrick. Namely: Ivone Hayford Thorold (1884-1913), and his younger brother Rupert Alexander Thorold (1886-1951). They lived with their mother at Donaghcumper, and Ivone may have been in his early teens in this picture. Perhaps dating it to the 1890s... (FYI - I was in Temple Bar over the weekend and I dropped into the Photo Detectives Exhibition at the National Photographic Archive it is really worth a visit (or a revisit), please do not miss out if you are in the area. ) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Vice-Regal Lodge, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: We have a very special edition for you today - we are posting 3 photos for you to enjoy. Sabina Higgins, wife of President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins, officially launched our “Photo Detectives” exhibition in September. During the event we discussed our catalogue of old photographs of Áras an Uachtaráin (the official home of the President of Ireland), and we made a promise to select a number of the photos and to share them here on Flickr. Áras an Uachtaráin, formerly the Vice Regal Lodge, is now the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Ireland. It is located off Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. The building, designed by Nathaniel Clements and completed in 1751 and added to over the years, is open to the public each Saturday. As usual we look forward to your comments and observations. And, of course, Photo Detectives is running at the National Photographic Archive in Temple Bar, Dublin, 7 days a week - make sure to drop in if you get a chance! Hotel, Pontoon, Co. Mayo
Description: This was the shot that should have been posted for Halloween and we might have discovered the man with the cloven hoof? Having said that, this shot by Mr. French shows a heavenly scene. And, way back when this photo was taken, it must have so restful and peaceful it seemed to be heaven? From today's contributions we learned that Healy's Hotel (in Pontoon, County Mayo) has operated on the shores of Lough Cullen since the 1830s/1840s. After a recent downturn in fortunes, apparently it has been bought recently for development (good news). But that development may involve demolition of the original structure and a rebuild (perhaps less good news)..... Square & Main street, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork
Description: If I remember correctly we have been to Mitchelstown before but not with this particular view and not with the Eason collection? Up in the heights of north Cork, Mitchelstown is a small town of wide streets and this fine square. The military firing range of Kilworth is nearby. Given that location and subject was firmly established, much of the discussion on this image was on the date. The general consensus is that we can likely refine the 40 year catalogue range (c.1900-1939) to the years around WWI (perhaps c.1915-1920). Specifically, this image must date from after 1906 (statue built), probably dates from at least the mid-1910s (businesses/posters/motor-car), and possibly dates from before 1920 (bank building work)..... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Certainly >1906. Perhaps <1920. Let's have a bit of fun.... in Navan
Description: For most recent photographs, with the exception of the DeValera image, we knew where if not the when or the who but today I believe we have a conundrum of sorts. The catalogue title on this says "View of Houses, Dublin City, Co. Dublin"! Now this is clearly an institution somewhere, perhaps not even in Dublin, and not a group of houses in the form of separate residences. What is it, where is it and when was this image likely to have been captured? While it took part of the weekend (proving that "sleeping on it" is sometimes useful), the persistence of a number of editors have confirmed that this is St. Joseph's Mercy Convent in Navan. Almost certainly photographed after 1910. derangedlemur and Niall McAuley in particular were instrumental in finding and confirming the location, with Frank_C providing extra information on the foreground stream. The latter has since been culverted - and is seemingly part of Leighsbrook Lane in Navan... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Street, Midleton, Co. Cork
Description: To end the week, on Friday this time, I thought a visit to Ireland's secessionist County of Cork would be appropriate! This lovely Eason shot of a street in Midleton is a far cry from the statues, banks and hackneys of yesterday's College Green shot. It may however have some bonuses nonetheless! The main 'bonus', prompted by initial investigations by [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and others, is that the car pictured is probably the Ford motor car of John Moore. John Moore, who lived on this street (Broderick Street) in Midleton, was one of only three registered car owners in the town proper. At least in the 1920s and 1930s. It seems more than plausible therefore that it is his car that is pictured. If so, it is likely that this was captured after 1916.... Dublin Castle and the State Apartments from the lawn
Description: This fine view of the rear of Dublin Castle and the facade of the State Apartments by Robert French keeps us in Dublin city for yet another day! Very little has changed in this scene in the intervening 100+ years. The main learning today - for myself anyway - was that the lawn pictured was the original site of the "Black Pool" or "Dubh Linn" - from which the city gets its name. As Béarla ar ndóigh. That is, according to the article and illustration which [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] links us to. As per the contemporary views which BultacoFan and Beachcomber provide, while changed significantly in the centuries before this image, it has not changed much since.... Around the rugged rocks the ragged rascal ran?
Description: The triumphant pose of the figure above those boulders reminded Morning Mary of the old tonguetwister. Shot by Mr. French on a cabinet sized camera it would appear to be in a not so accessible position at Carrignagat, Collooney, County Sligo. This monument, dedicated to 1798 leader Bartholomew Teeling commemorates actions at the Battle of Collooney. Built by sculptors Harrison & Sons of Great Brunswick St, Dublin, our contributors tell us that the Teeling Monument was unveiled on the battle's centenary - 1898. Helping refine the 50 year catalogue range to a 15 year period in the late 1890s or 1900s.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Definitely 1898 (monument unveiled) NLI Ref: L_CAB_03577 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

The shop windows have leadlight inserts decorating the top part of the frames and the light fittings hanging inside the shop are Art Deco style, as is a small wall bracket on the back wall. A fine collection of ivy? (on 'St. Columb's House')
Description: The title for this Stereo Pairs image goes "Celtic Oratory - very overgrown" which is somewhat of an understatement! Looking at the door and the stonework I would not have recognised it as a Celtic church building festooned with ivy. It will be interesting to see if we can establish its location? (FYI - Well done to all on the terrific detective work yesterday! To identify not only the people in the shot but the place where it was taken was excellent and very enjoyable to watch as it unfolded.) Perhaps less intensive (but no less invaluable) investigation has confirmed that this is St. Columb's House a 12th (or perhaps 10th) century oratory in Kells, County Meath.... Ducats Grove, Carlow, Co. Carlow
Description: This fairytale castle in Co. Carlow looks more like a child's dream than a mature person's reality. Lines of statues leading to a door guarded by armoured spear bearers. All this was bound to deter the faint hearted! As attested by the contributions on this image (and the associatied Wikipedia article), while the main structure of Duckett's Grove remains, the statues and interiors do not. Home to the Duckett family for several hundred years, it was never fully occupied following their departure in 1916 - and the main building was destroyed by fire in 1933. While the interiors were never redeveloped, some life has returned to the place - with events, tourism and gardens that form part of the Carlow Garden Trail... Valencia - Valentia? A storm in a tea-cup?
Description: Perhaps the spot with the most exotic name in Ireland Valencia/Valentia (which ever way you choose to spell it). It looks delightful in the sun, and suitably Mediteranean with the steamer berthed close by! The presence of the steamer will probably help with the dating of this shot(?) Wishing all our Irish friends a happy Bank Holiday weekend and a good weekend to those outside Ireland. Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Definitely after 1895 (ship). Possibly after 1907 (distant buildings). Feltrim Hill, Swords, Co. Dublin
Description: Feltrim Hill in Swords looking down on Charles J. Haughey's old home and the Swords, Malahide and Howth in the distance. This was a prominent landmark in its time and was built on a rare (for Ireland) outcrop of coral based limestone. Almost simultaneously several contributors identified the structure pictured as Feltrim Windmill. It was - we learned - built in the 17th century from Dutch bricks by Dutch workers. Originally used as a woolen mill, it became a corn mill, and was apparently used for a time as a semaphore tower. It stood until 1973 - when it was mysteriously/surreptitiously/criminally(?) demolished one Saturday night. It's demise apparently the source of discussion on the floor of the Dáil....
