Camp, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: And faithfully following French's journey in the Faithful County we have a military camp with serried lines of "bell tents" inside/outside a military base. This was either when the army were on a war footing or when manoeuvres were underway. Is it at the extreme end of the Lawrence range or earlier, perhaps during the Boer War? Various contributors (including swordscookie and beachcomberaustralia) confirm that this is Crinkill Barracks in Birr. Niall McAuley suggests that it may have been captured from "upon high" nearby. Flickr user Stephen Callaghan captured some similar photos of the barracks very recently, and has since confirmed that this was the main gate, and likely captured from atop the barrack block. Stephen tells us that the camp-area was known as the "Fourteen Acres", and "was used for parades, training and sports".... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Possibly before c.1908 NLI Ref: L_ROY_09952 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Bombingen av Steinkjer
Description: Beskrivelse: Den tyske invasjonen innebar at 24 byer og tettsteder i Norge ble bombet våren 1940. Det gjaldt bl.a. Arkivreferanse: PA-1667U2_026 The bombing of Steinkjer The German invasion resulted in 24 towns and villages being bombed in the spring of 1940. This included Molde, Kristiansund, Steinkjer and Namsos. The National Archives of Norway has received 64 photographs (paper positives 9 x 12 cm) that according to information on the envelope are taken in July 1940 in Kristiansund, Steinkjer and Levanger. The photos have belonged to engineer Hallvard Løken (1908-1995). He was a good amateur photographer and might very well have taken the photos himself. Thanks to help from others, we have been able to pinpoint many of the locations, but not all of them, and the National Archives of Norway is very happy to receive further information.

Queuing for Rides at the Hoppings
Description: Newcastle Town Moor 1952, people queuing for the rides at the Hoppings. The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle's Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land. The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide, to counter-attract the 'Summer Race Meeting' at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness. It proved to be a great success and the fair is still being enjoyed to this very day. Ref: TWAS:944/2432 (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Meet Moate's Main Street - from the west!
Description: Moate, Co. Westmeath has a long and noble main street and it is well captured in this fine Eason shot! We have some of the usual suspects standing about but for me the pose of the man about to climb onto the cart is BIZ! There are no shortage of chimney pots on view and I am sure turf/peat was the staple diet for the fireplaces thereabouts. Given that the location of this image was pretty unequivocal, much of the discussion on its subject focused on the buildings and businesses which are visible. And, based on the adverts visible (including the Morganol Lubricants signage), it seems likely we are after c.1908. Also, given that we don't seem to see this memorial cross outside the courthouse, we are likely before c.1925..... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Likely c.1908-1925. Possibly late 1910s-early 1920s. Thomas O'Criothan, Author, Great Blasket
Description: Happy Cyber Monday to all and when you are online take a moment to imagine how much life has changed since Tomás O'Críothán walked this earth? Tomás used longhand to write, he will have used the old Irish script with the various accents and letter forms in use at the time. All has changed, changed utterly since then and if we could identify the place then the streetview - might not have changed at all! Apart from the discussion on the man and his works (Tomás Ó Criomhthain (1856-1937)), much of the discussion today was on the date of the image. While a copy of this image is apparently held by the Smithsonian (which dates it to "c.1900"), and though our photographer Thomas Mason may have visited the islands with scholar Robin Flower (Bláithín) c.1910, there's a possibility that the image was captured a little later, c.1920. Photographer: Thomas H. Mason Collection: Mason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1890-1910. Possibly c.1910. Perhaps as late as c.1920s. Church interior showing altar and pews. Script over altar reads
Description: 1860-1930 gives us a date window of 70 years and yet there may be nothing in this photo which will allow us to significantly narrow that window? I am confident that we will get the location. In terms of location, it is unequivocally established that this is St Catherine's Church (CoI) in Ahascragh, County Galway. (A church and churchyard which the Dillons and ourselves have visited before). In terms of date, based in particular on inputs from Rory Sherlock and Bernard Healy, the guys have been able to more than half the 70-year range to perhaps 30-years (likely 1870s/80s/90s). This is based primarily what we see (and don't see) on the left-handside of the image. Specifically, the scrolled memorial dates to the early 1870s. So we must be after that. And this memorial was moved, and a new trancept was built, before the mid-1900s. So we must be before then.... Fógra: There will be a guided tour of the Photo Detectives Exhibition on Wednesday next 29th November at 11 am. This tour will take approx. 45 minutes and is free to the public. Ballsbridge, Co. Dublin
Description: I keep thinking I have seen this photograph before? We are back in Ballsbridge with this fine shot from Mr French. There is a lot going on which would suggest Spring Show or Horse Show? From a dating point of view I see no sign of the internal combustion engine. As usual we had excellent input on the date and location of this image. On the latter, BeachcomberAustralia suggests that French captured this image from the window of a building (now a restaurant) just west of the bridge. On the date, Niall McAuley's investigations on the businesses pictured (and the electrified tram lines) that this image likely dates from the very early 1900s (possibly c.1901-1906)..... Donnacomper, Celbridge, Co. Kildare
Description: On this Monday we present a fine Lawrence shot of Donnacomper. What can you tell us about it? And the main things that our contributors "told us about" were the house/estate, and the lads (in the cart) by its back-door :) On the estate, we learned that Donaghcumper House was built in the late 18th century (1770s), and significantly remodeled in Tudor Revival style in the 19th century (1830s) .It was primarily associated with the Kirkpatrick family. On the lads in the cart, the consensus is that they are members of the extended Kirkpatrick family. And, while several other Kirkpatrick "cousins" are possible, it seems plausible that the boys in the cart are the sons of Elizabeth Mary Kirkpatrick. Namely: Ivone Hayford Thorold (1884-1913), and his younger brother Rupert Alexander Thorold (1886-1951). They lived with their mother at Donaghcumper, and Ivone may have been in his early teens in this picture. Perhaps dating it to the 1890s... (FYI - I was in Temple Bar over the weekend and I dropped into the Photo Detectives Exhibition at the National Photographic Archive it is really worth a visit (or a revisit), please do not miss out if you are in the area. ) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. What are they all looking at?
Description: Labelled "Castle, Throne Room, Dublin" in the catalogue, no throne room ever looked so airy and informal. But then, of course, this is not Dublin Castle's Throne Room! Instead, a market/fair is in progress somewhere - with a lot going on. That huddle in the left foreground with men/boys bent over a table, leaning on one another in companionable familiarity while three ladies in shawls stand apart and looking on is quite intriguing! What are they looking at? A virtual sticky bun, we haven't had a virtual sticky bun for quite a while, to the most interesting or novel suggestion! And, of course, we are in Clifden, County Galway. As well as the possible 'amusements' available, the general feeling is that much of the crowd are engaged in otherwise legitimate trade :) We can even see the same weigh-station we've visited before. Sticky buns all-round :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Down by the Sea
Description: The title in our catalogue is "Castle, Throne Room, Dublin City, Co. Dublin", which is obviously incorrect. I am not even sure that this is a Lawrence shot, at lease not a typical Lawrence shot. I will list it as it is in the system - and review later when we see what transpires during the course of your deliberations. The overriding consensus is that this is the strand at the Murrough, by Wicklow Town. Perhaps a few yards (and a few years) separated from a reverse view we had previously. In terms of subject, it seems likely that this image captures an early 20th century crowd enjoying the Wicklow Regatta (first run in 1878). Hatters Castle in the trees!
Description: The original title of this Stereo Pairs image is "Long shot over trees, mountain in background, Co. Wicklow" and it is a long shot and a glimpse rather than a full view of a castellated house. No doubt if the house is not identified the hill/mountain in the background will? Almost simultaneously, Rory_Sherlock and Niall McAuley identified this as Glanmore Castle near Ashford in County Wicklow. Originally owned by the Syne family through many generations (including John Millington Synge's own immediate family), the castle has since been redeveloped as separate dwellings - some of which have apparently been "on the market" in recent years.... Roundwood, Co. Wicklow
Description: Roundwood as none of us will have seen it. Irelands highest village looks like a tiny hamlet dominated by a fine stone church with maidens dancing at the crossroads (sorry, I got a bit carried away there)! Children in pinnies, a sunhat on display and a soft misty fog on the mountains, Ireland as we dream of it. Given that subject and location are clear, the main discussion today was on date. The general consensus (based on businesses and buildings visible) is that we are likely closer to the first half of the catalogue range (c.1880s) than to the upper bound (c.1900). Interestingly, [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] highlights that this very picture hangs in the lounge of the (now very smartly rennovated) building on the right hand side of the street. Hotel, Pontoon, Co. Mayo
Description: This was the shot that should have been posted for Halloween and we might have discovered the man with the cloven hoof? Having said that, this shot by Mr. French shows a heavenly scene. And, way back when this photo was taken, it must have so restful and peaceful it seemed to be heaven? From today's contributions we learned that Healy's Hotel (in Pontoon, County Mayo) has operated on the shores of Lough Cullen since the 1830s/1840s. After a recent downturn in fortunes, apparently it has been bought recently for development (good news). But that development may involve demolition of the original structure and a rebuild (perhaps less good news)..... Description: For a change we have an image from the Stereo Pairs Collection today with a rocky road surrounded by rocky fields and rocky walls in various states of repair. There is no indication where this might be though it does look to be "down the West" to me. What do you think? For a while we thought perhaps that we had stumped the unstumpable. But, yet again, we found the community to be stump-proof. derangedlemur and others highlighted that the proximate images in the series (STP_0772, STP_0771, etc) all seemed to be in the Wicklow area (Glendalough, Laragh, etc). And, B-59 noted that the apparent reverse view (STP_0769) showed a body of water. Ultimately, andymullane identified it as Lough Dan House - with corroboration from O Mac and Salty Windows. A little bit misty out there!
Description: Appropriately on Halloween a misty scene, this time in west Kerry, to remind us that summer is well and truly gone and winter is coming with darkness and cold. When this image was taken Halloween was a time for reverence and remberance while the young people celebrated with the fruits of the harvest. A far cry then from the decorated houses, witches costumes and "Trick or Treat" demands at the door. Perhaps somebody in Library Towers is just getting old and cranky? Based on research in particular from [https://www.flickr.com/photos/bernardhealy] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] it seems likely that we can refine the 5-decade catalogue range to perhaps a decade of so around 1910. Specifically, the guys suggest that the white Celtic cross (by the church portico) is inscribed with a date in 1904. Meaning (unless the inscription post-dated the cross itself) we are almost certainly after then. And that, perhaps, the telegraph poles suggest a date after 1907 (before which Ballyferriter Post Office wasn't connected to the telegraph).... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely after 1904 (grave cross). Perhaps after 1907 (telegraph poles). Cloghleigh Castle, Moorepark, Fermoy, Co. Cork
Description: Back to North Cork today to near Fermoy. These fortified households are dotted all around the island and calling them castles appears to be a bit of an over-inflation. This one looks very big in comparison with others I know, I wonder what makes this one so interesting? And, we learned, what makes this one interesting is its bloody past. The original builders of this tower house were the Norman De Caunton family. Later known as the Condons, they sided with the Earl of Desmond in the 1580s during the Desmond Rebellion. On the losing side, they were forced to surrender their estates in 1588. They regained the castle for a period - only to see it taken over by the Fleetwood family in 1622. During the particularly bloody Eleven Years War (aka the Confederate Wars in Ireland), the Condons retook the castle again - decimating the surrendering Fleetwoods. The Condon return was short lived however as, in 1643, English forces retook the castle and its Condon occupants were "put to the sword". Many of *these* English soliders however were killed in the subsequent Battle of Cloghleagh. The castle may have been in the possession of the War Department when this image was captured.... Square & Main street, Mitchelstown, Co. Cork
Description: If I remember correctly we have been to Mitchelstown before but not with this particular view and not with the Eason collection? Up in the heights of north Cork, Mitchelstown is a small town of wide streets and this fine square. The military firing range of Kilworth is nearby. Given that location and subject was firmly established, much of the discussion on this image was on the date. The general consensus is that we can likely refine the 40 year catalogue range (c.1900-1939) to the years around WWI (perhaps c.1915-1920). Specifically, this image must date from after 1906 (statue built), probably dates from at least the mid-1910s (businesses/posters/motor-car), and possibly dates from before 1920 (bank building work)..... Rathmines Road Upper, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: Todays offering from the vaults beneath Library Towers is much more identifiable than last Friday's offering. Rathmines Road Upper back in the day with tramlines, horse cart deliveries and cobbled road surface. Heaven! While, unlike Friday's headscratcher, location and subject were largely known here, the date was not. Based on the businesses, tramlines and (partial) posters visible, the general consensus is that this image dates from around 1910-1911. Comparing the modern streetview, which captures similar businesses and business names (a laundry, Kennedy's, pub, etc) you'd perhaps be forgiven for thinking it was less than 100+ years ago.... Let's have a bit of fun.... in Navan
Description: For most recent photographs, with the exception of the DeValera image, we knew where if not the when or the who but today I believe we have a conundrum of sorts. The catalogue title on this says "View of Houses, Dublin City, Co. Dublin"! Now this is clearly an institution somewhere, perhaps not even in Dublin, and not a group of houses in the form of separate residences. What is it, where is it and when was this image likely to have been captured? While it took part of the weekend (proving that "sleeping on it" is sometimes useful), the persistence of a number of editors have confirmed that this is St. Joseph's Mercy Convent in Navan. Almost certainly photographed after 1910. derangedlemur and Niall McAuley in particular were instrumental in finding and confirming the location, with Frank_C providing extra information on the foreground stream. The latter has since been culverted - and is seemingly part of Leighsbrook Lane in Navan... Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Description: I am weary of Dublin/Cork photographs, and so today I made an executive decision to go up to the "Wee North" today :) This fine Royal plate showing the Square (not the Diamond mind you) in Coalisland. It may bring a breath of fresh air to those tired of city life! EXPLORE KLAXON - BAWAAAAAAH - Our photograph of De Valera in Grand Parade yesterday was our 100th Explore entry. This is a remarkable number and is entirely due to the community who do all the work on this stream. Congratualtions one and all! Coming back to the "Wee North", among other contributions and contributors, Bernard Healy's census investigations suggest that this image is possibly after the 1901 census. But perhaps before the 1911 census. The lower bound is suggested because the Fullen family (of the "F.V. Fullen" signage we see) may have been living elsewhere nearby during the 1901 census. The upper bound is suggested because (while the Fullens were almost certainly "here" by 1911) some of the other businesses pictured were gone or had moved by then.... Protecting his friend or standing over the vanquished?
Description: The calm after the storm gives us time to visit the National Museum - our sister institution across the yard. The title of this shot is "Museum, Dublin" and of course it is likely in the museum in Dublin. A fine sculpture apparently depicting a scene from a battle, it should perhaps be easy enough to identify? We, in the shelters of Library Towers, hope that all our Irish and UK supporters came through the delights of ex-Hurricane Ophelia unscathed yesterday! Our contributors, including O Mac, B-59, Beachcomber, Niall McAuley, and Bernard Healy, gave us a wealth of information on this statue and its subject. The statue, of bronze-painted plaster, was completed sculptor Charles Bell Birch in Dublin around 1880. The captured here in Dublin's National Museum, it is now housed in the National Army Museum in London. The subject of the statue is Lieutenant Walter Hamilton of Inistioge, County Kilkenny. Hamilton, who won a VC for his actions during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, was killed during a siege of the British Residency in Kabul. The manner of his exploits, "conspicuous gallantry" and death were such that (perhaps unsurprisingly) they were captured more than once in print. And, obviously, in this dramatic statue.... Street, Midleton, Co. Cork
Description: To end the week, on Friday this time, I thought a visit to Ireland's secessionist County of Cork would be appropriate! This lovely Eason shot of a street in Midleton is a far cry from the statues, banks and hackneys of yesterday's College Green shot. It may however have some bonuses nonetheless! The main 'bonus', prompted by initial investigations by [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] and [https://www.flickr.com/photos/beachcomberaustralia] and others, is that the car pictured is probably the Ford motor car of John Moore. John Moore, who lived on this street (Broderick Street) in Midleton, was one of only three registered car owners in the town proper. At least in the 1920s and 1930s. It seems more than plausible therefore that it is his car that is pictured. If so, it is likely that this was captured after 1916.... Dublin Castle and the State Apartments from the lawn
Description: This fine view of the rear of Dublin Castle and the facade of the State Apartments by Robert French keeps us in Dublin city for yet another day! Very little has changed in this scene in the intervening 100+ years. The main learning today - for myself anyway - was that the lawn pictured was the original site of the "Black Pool" or "Dubh Linn" - from which the city gets its name. As Béarla ar ndóigh. That is, according to the article and illustration which [https://www.flickr.com/photos/gnmcauley] links us to. As per the contemporary views which BultacoFan and Beachcomber provide, while changed significantly in the centuries before this image, it has not changed much since.... Feltrim Hill, Swords, Co. Dublin
Description: Feltrim Hill in Swords looking down on Charles J. Haughey's old home and the Swords, Malahide and Howth in the distance. This was a prominent landmark in its time and was built on a rare (for Ireland) outcrop of coral based limestone. Almost simultaneously several contributors identified the structure pictured as Feltrim Windmill. It was - we learned - built in the 17th century from Dutch bricks by Dutch workers. Originally used as a woolen mill, it became a corn mill, and was apparently used for a time as a semaphore tower. It stood until 1973 - when it was mysteriously/surreptitiously/criminally(?) demolished one Saturday night. It's demise apparently the source of discussion on the floor of the Dáil.... Glen of Imaal, Co. Wicklow
Description: The Glen of Imaal - Gleann Uí Mháill - the Bare Glen but not the Glen itself but rather Leitrim Castle in the Glen. If you are not confused by now then I hope that there will be clarity by the evening? As the Irish Defence Forces artillery range is located there it is not a place much frequented by visitors but its rugged beauty is well worth viewing. Almost simultaneously this morning, Rory_Sherlock and Niall McAuley proposed/confirmed that this is (or more properly was) Leitrim Barracks close to the Military Road in County Wicklow. While appearing in maps from the 19th and very early 20th centuries, the building was severaly damaged by fire in 1914. And now no longer stands... View of a Dublin Street (Dorset Street), Drumcondra, Co. Dublin
Description: A visit to the Eason collection for Tuesday with a great and busy view of Dorset Street in Dublin's city centre. While it does not have the clarity and detail of yesterdays Lawrence Royal plate it has lots going on and plenty of names to aid an exciting search! Following an initial "gut feel" from Beachcomber, and some slightly more evidence-based sleuthing by Bernard Healy (assisted by Niall McAuley), it seems likely that this image was taken around 1913 - give or take a few years. Probably in the run-up to Easter. This is based on the cards on offer at no.24 Dorest Street, but mainly on the (perhaps then newly opened) Tylers bootstore at no.29. Just goes to show that there is room in our detective ranks for both the gut instinct of the gumshoe, and the hardslog of the criminalist :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Description: Confusion reigns, the Quays in Derry have changed direction, instead of running along the river Foyle it appears that they now run out into Lough Erne? Or perhaps the cataloguer is in error on this shot or even Mr. French was on the sauce when he marked them up? Whatever the cause I am sure that this is a beautiful scene, well taken and most suitable to end the week. Have a great weekend one and all! And so, confusion no longer reigns, with confirmation that this is not Derry, but Derrylin in County Fermanagh. Specifically, Knockniny Hotel on Upper Lough Erne. Located on Knockninny Quay, this hotel still stands - and evidently up for sale until very recently. There was even an association with a previous image capturing the tourism history of Lough Erne, with Niall McAuley reminding us that this hotel was opened by John Grey Vesey Porter in 1873. Possibly taking a decade or so off the earliest date in the catalogue range... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range 1865-1914. R.I.C. Depot, Dublin City, Co. Dublin
Description: Situated just inside the North Circular Road gates to the Phoenix Park these lovely, old, red bricked buildings always seemed separate from the old RIC Depot. Was Mr. French correct in his assertion that it was part of the Depot? It is certainly not the image that is shown these days for Garda Headquarters. The suggestion (proposed by Bernard Healy and endorsed by Niall McAuley and swordscookie) is that these were the 'Married Quarters' for RIC members and families based at the main Depot. Though only very slightly modified over the years since, the modern StreetView doesn't include the armed sentries which [https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]] tells us patrolled the site in the decades around this photo.... Harbour & Parade, Portstewart, Co. Derry
Description: We are staying north of the border today, in Portstewart to be precise. Having had a good look at the photo I am struck by the three hard working (is that the correct word?) men on the middle pier, they seem to be very relaxed and laid back. I am expecting a very precise date range for this photo. Among the commetary, insights and dating suggestions for this image is confirmation (from the StreetView provided by B-59) that the buildings in the middle of this image have been replaced or otherwise unrecognisable. Thankfully the buildings on the left of Harbour Place and the right of the Promenade remain. One of the other main takeaways from today is how excited we all are for tomorrow's launch of the Photo Detectives exhibition One more sleep indeed :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1880-1900 NLI Ref: L_ROY_05579 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Getting back to the days task, we have a very nice photo from the dead center of Belfast for your perusal, all contributions and comments welcome. Other than puns and poetry (and confirmation that the fountain is now more flower-bed than water-feature), the main learning today was that this fountain was built by the Sun Foundry around 1880 - helping condense the likely date range quite a bit.... Crosthwaite Park, Kingstown, Co. Dublin
Description: A shot of a suburban scene in an exclusive area of Kingstown, as it was then known, in County Dublin. The beauty of the seascape, the proximity to the city centre and the easy access to the first railway in Ireland all make this area still very desirable. What was it about Crosthwaite Park though that attracted Robert French to take such shots? Niall McAuley tells us that this part of Dún Laoghaire was developed in the 1860s and 1870s, so it is possible that they were relatively new when this photo was taken. Sharon.corbet and Dún Laoghaire Micheál offer some extra information on the namesake developer, John Crosthwaite (1794-1884) who was a local - with Dún Laoghaire Micheál going so far as to source an article on the reading of his will. The houses surrounding the park were seemingly home to a number of influential names over the years, so it may be its grandeur, relative newness, or the prestige address that prompted this shot.... Dunluce Castle, Giant's Causeway, Co. Antrim
Description: We are somewhat regular visitors to Antrim's Causeway Coast, but had not visited Dunluce Castle before. As BeachcomberAustralia points-out, we've ridden the Giant's Causeway Tramway before - the "third rail" of which we see here. It is this third rail that helps date the image in fact, as beachcomberaustralia tells us that it was replaced with overhead wires in 1899. A move that is perhaps unsurprising given the danger it posed - electrocuting at least one unfortunate visitor.... Victoria Castle East Gate, Killiney, Co. Dublin
Description: Had I not seen the caption on this image I would have thought that I was looking at a castle in Spain or some far land! A beautiful scene that is nearly on the doorstep of Library Towers! Killiney has changed a wee bit since this shot was taken by Mr. French... Sharon.corbet confirms that the castle has also changed a bit since - at least in name. Now called Manderley Castle and owned by musician Enya, Victoria Castle was built in the 1840s by QC and MP Robert Warren. O Mac suggests that it was captured before before the early 1880s (when Killiney railway station was built and would've been visible in the middle distance, as it is in the modern StreetView). Description: Library Towers stands on one side, the National Museum stands on the other and the adage "Oh, East is East, and West is West, and never the twain shall meet" applies! A very old view of the Museum which will never be seen again. Something we also won't see again is the "fire escape station" we see in the centre. Our intrepid Flickroonies confirm that this public safety equipment wasn't just "left lying around" like so much street furniture. Often manned, it was quickly brought to bear when needed. Certainly quicker than if transported from a distance - without the assistance of the 13 tonne engines the Dublin Fire Brigade has today. Thankfully (as far as we know), it was never needed to deal with threats to the National Museum's collonaded facade (or indeed its collections).... The Grand Stand Hotel, Curragh Camp
Description: The deep treasure chest that is the Lawrence Collection is the gift that keeps on giving. Today we are treated to a lovely cabinet sized plate of the Grand Stand Hotel at the Curragh Racecourse in County Kildare. The whole racing industry has changed radically since this shot was taken by Mr. French, but then the whole world has changed... ... And this area has changed. To the extent that I've added this image to our "no longer standing" album. While BeachcomberAustralia highlights that at least some of the building on the left survives (under the Curragh grandstand), and the hotel on the right survived until the last decade (til the streetview car passed-by in 2009 ), we've since learned that the hotel is now entirely demolished. Ice House, Ballina, Co. Mayo
Description: Today we will leave politics aside for a while as we visit Ballina in Co. Mayo and a fabulous house on the banks of the beautiful Moy! I spent a lot of time there as a child but I must admit that this house does not register in my memories of the place. Am glad however to say that, while my memory may be a little worse-for-wear, the building pictured still stands - confirmed by today's contributors to have been repurposed as a hotel. With thanks to B-59, BeachcomberAustralia, and Niall McAuley (and the entry in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage) we know that the building dates to (at least) the 1830s, and was further developed in the late 1850s. Originally a store and hub of the river's main salmon fishery, one imagines any ice found here now is used less for keeping fish from spoiling, and more for keeping drinks from warming... I must admit that my visits to Donegal have been few and far between, I must rectify that! It transpires that we did not in fact know where it was. Doctor Atkins, District Asylum
Description: A stream of irreverent thoughts came into my head when I saw the title to this shot from Poole! Is he perhaps an inmate or the attendant? Does he make "Dr. Atkins Patented Nerve Powders for Lunatic conditions"? No doubt the esteemed Dr. was a healer who laboured to bring solace to those with mental illness but who was he and what asylum did he work at? And we have answers to all our questions. The consensus is that this is Dr Ringrose Atkins, the Resident Medical Superintendent of Waterford District Asylum (an institution we have visited before). Dr Atkins was from a Cork family (which apparently included several generations of medical professionals), and he was appointed to the position in Waterford in 1878. Evidently he was also president of the YMCA and involved in the temperance movement. He died in his late 40s from complications arising from appendicitis. Given that the 1898 edition of the Journal of Psychiatry records his death as occuring that February, it seems we'll need to tweak the catalogue date range for this image..... Photographer: A. H. Description: From the academic Sir John P. Mahaffy to his more famous knightly colleague Sir Walter Raleigh and a cottage in County Cork! I thought that the only remaining reminder of Raleigh was Tournafulla in Limerick where his troops decimated the population after the Desmond rebellion...? No dogs will dine here by God!
Description: The Royal Hospital Kilmainham dining hall in all its splendour with the panoply of war (in case anyone might forget its residents former calling)! A building that seemed destined to be made derelict, but has been resurrected and restored to become a priceless addition to the Dublin art scene! Guliolopez provides some extra detail on the 17th-century 'great hall', which used for dining and recreation by the ex-soldiers who were cared-for in the RHK. As per the "then and now" comparison image that Niall McAuley provides, it's still used for events, receptions and dining - though clearly without all the weaponry and armour adorning the walls. I wonder where it all went.....? Description: I just love putting up these images from the Stereo Pairs Collection! There is something other worldly about them, a really distinctive view into the past and in stereo to boot! This image with its long and convoluted catalogue description has really caught my fancy with the mix of aspects, the bridge, the stone walls, the ruins, the apparently 'in use' church buildings and the more modern structures in the background. Who will be first to identify them and give us a location - The Lemur, Sharon, Niall, That guy from the land down under? Lets go.... And indeed it was Niall (quickly corroborated by Stuart) who gave us the location - as the church and abbey at Cong, County Meath. Confirming that very little around here remains unknown for too long... The Ponte Vecchio, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: Today we are staying in the Faithful County with a fine photo of the Old Bridge at Birr. I have been to Birr a few times, and I do not remember seeing a bridge like this - I wonder if it is still there? Sharon.corbet tells us that the bridge (dating to the 17th century) is still there - though the houses on the bridge were removed as recently as the late 20th century. There seems to be a green amenity area there now - and one would possibly be forgiven for not realising it's on a bridge.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Possibly after 1901. Kinnetty Village, Birr, Co. Offaly
Description: The Lawrence Collection and the work of Mr. French really is a joy to behold! Each day seems to offer a view of a new place, a new element of an Ireland long gone and a charming insight into a country before the advent of modernisation, social upheaval and war. This beautiful, charming Royal Plate image of Kinnetty (?) looks as though "peace comes dropping slow" there each day and rests until midnight. Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Possibly c.1890-1900. Main St. Edgeworthstown, Co. Longford
Description: 'A soft day thank God', with the wet roads giving proof of a recent rainfall. Edgeworthstown is a charming wee town with a good sized main street set in an emerald green countryside. The growth of traffic rendered it a bottleneck, but thankfully now it has been by-passed! Perhaps it has even changed its name? The consensus (half jokingly, half seriously) is that this image dates from a typical Irish summer, and could possibly be as much as a decade later than the suggested catalogue range (putting it perhaps in the 1910s or later). If so there's a suggestion that the young lady in the doorway of Monahan's shop could be the Margaret listed in the 1911 census)..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1880-1900. Possibly later. Laurence's Gate, Drogheda, Co. Louth
Description: Laurence by Lawrence? Not quite (as Mr. French was the photographer), but this is a view that we can still replicate. Apart from the intrusion of the ubiquitous car that is. Drogheda is a town with a long and varied history, and it is only right that we should feature the remaining gate tower on its eastern side! Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865 - 1914 (probably later in range given businesses visible) NLI Ref: L_ROY_09995 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Bridge St. Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo
Description: A fine royal plate from the ubiquitous Mr. French to end the week, and a visit to the Wesht, to Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo (God help us). A nice view down a long, straight street apparently leading to a bridge, with a few people about to add interest. But is there a dog? Or two? Description: This wonderful church interior, the stained glass, the pews, the... Oh! I must have been on the sauce last night without knowing it! This is clearly a beautiful mansion somewhere but where and is it still there? Niall McAuley quickly identified this (clearly mislabelled) gothic manor as Shelton Abbey, County Wicklow. Previously the estate of the Earl of Wicklow, it definitely still stands, and has apparently been operated by the prison service as an 'open prison' since the 1970s. Courtown Harbour, Co. Wexford
Description: Staying down in 'yellowbelly country' once again, but this time the tourist attraction that is Courtown rather than the thriving port of Wexford. This is a beautiful image with great clarity showing the natural and man made attractions of Courtown. The beautiful beach backed by the golden sand dunes, the lovely harbour and the sun shining down. What more could you ask? The Quay, Wexford, Co. Wexford
Description: Leaving the politics of the early 20th century behind we begin this week with an image by Robert French of the Quays in Wexford. Masts, handcarts, ropes, idlers, cargo, sailing ships, paddle steamers - the place was alive and must have had a buzz about it. South Main Street and Clock Gate from North Youghal, Queenstown, Co. Cork
Description: I can almost hear the protests as I type! Youghal and Cobh/Queenstown are two distinct towns in County Cork and North Youghal is not a part of the latter! Labelling aside, this lovely Eason image of South (or is it North?) Main Street in Youghal has so much going on that it makes a fitting image to end the week. Hats, bonnets, chemises aka shimmys, little street urchins and nary a motoring car at all at all. Wonderful! Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939.
