Celtic Cross, Aran Islands.
Description: One of our first photos from Inismore on the Aran Islands. As per Sharon the Cross was carved by the Farther of Pádraig Pearse. James Pearse, established a stonemasonry business in the 1850s a business which flourished and provided the Pearses with a comfortable middle-class upbringing. Pearse's father was a mason and monumental sculptor, and originally a Unitarian from Birmingham in England. swordscookie aka Sean Mulligan tells us about footwear called Pampooties which were used extensively on the island. Beachcomber provided the following, "They are formed of a single piece of untanned hide folded around the foot and stitched with twine or a leather strap. Hide from the buttocks was most often used. The hair was usually left and this improved the shoe's grip. The raw hide is kept flexible by use and the constant damp conditions of Western Ireland. However the shoes are not made to last. They are prone to rot and were usually kept for as little as a month or less. ... Wonders of the East - Hoppings
Description: 'Wonders of the East' performers entertain the public at the Hoppings. 1940's The Hoppings is a popular fair in the North East of England, held in the last full week of June every year on Newcastle's Town Moor, spanning around 40 acres of land. The Hoppings started out as a Temperance Festival in 1882, when Newcastle Temperance organisations decided to revive the annual gatherings that they had previously held, but included different festivities to coincide, to counter-attract the 'Summer Race Meeting' at Gosforth Park, which was seen as a source of drunkenness. It proved to be a great success and the fair is still being enjoyed to this very day. Ref: TWAS:944/2444 (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Turbinia - Closeup
Description: A close view of the damage which 'Turbinia' sustained in 1907. She was moored at Wallsend when a ship launched from Stephenson's shipyard crashed into her. The picture shows where the bow of the other ship hit 'Turbinia's side. There was extensive damage to the hull, the guardrails were bent and part of the wheelhouse was destroyed. There was no great damage to her engines, though, and she was fully restored in the same year. One man and his gun
Description: One with very few clues today to end the week and what looks like an early Stereo Pairs shot. A man on his own standing on a stone jetty with a heavy cannon gun beside him. In the background is a conical bare hill/mountain. What I would really like to know today is what was the gun called? Based in no small part on inputs (and a corroberating photo) from mcginley2012 it is confirmed that this cannon is on the lake shore of Ballynahinch Lake in County Galway. Apparently "found" in the lake it was perhaps placed here as part of the demesne for Ballynahinch Castle (now a hotel)..... On the "where", it is confirmed that William Robert Caldbeck's gravestone is in Guilcagh Cemetery, about 2 miles south of Portlaw. On the "who", William himself was postmaster and shopkeeper in Portlaw, County Waterford, and was clearly much loved by his friends in the area - as they erected a fountain in his memory and which still stands in the town. On the "when", as the grave and gravestone look especially fresh, it seems likely that this dates from quite early in the proposed catalogue range.... Photographer: A. H. Bringing light into darkness
Description: Standing proud and distinctive on Wicklow Head the lighthouse was an essential beacon for the many ships sailing along the Irish Sea. Our great hope is that we can get a little more information on it than we did on the Emmetts Cricket Club from Skerries? With thanks in particular to sharon.corbet, Niall McAuley and BeachcomberAustralia we learned that there are actually a number of lighthouses on Wicklow Head. This quick flyover video shows their relative positions. One of the earliest examples, the "Rear Lighthouse" is "behind" the photographer here, further inland, and was built in 1781 and is now a holiday rental operated the the Irish Landmark Trust. The most recent, somewhat over the "hump" we see here and closer to the water, was built in the 19th century and is still active and operated by the Commissioners of Irish Lights. The one pictured here, effectively between the other two, dates from the 18th century, but is apparently seen here after some 19th century developments. The "outbuildings" are no longer standing - though the tower itself remains.... Sail and steam in harbour
Description: Returning to matters maritime once more we have a very busy harbour scene with steam and sailing ships berthed beside quays somewhere. In the background can be seen many stacks denoting industry and in the foreground is a quay with imported timber. Wherever it was business appears to have been booming at that time but where was it? With thanks to [https://www.flickr.com/photos/scorbet] it seems almost certain that this was taken in Drogheda, County Louth..... On the beach
Description: A scene from a beach, apparently in Achill, where the locals are gathered with tins, buckets, boats and nets. What is really unusual and demands some explanation is the man inspecting the nets while holding a gun? (Incidentally this is the first time I can recall uploading an "Imperial" sized image to this stream. I shall have to study it carefully to see the difference such a significant size will make.) We are on Dooagh Beach, thanks Niall McAuley I think we can understand that the peopel we see had a hard existence, it is nice to see some of them playfully pose for the camera. BeachcomberAustralia provides a piece from the magnificent Trove website curated by our friends from The National Library of Australia where we see Michael Davitt pleading for the building of Piers and Harbours for the fishermen in the area, Davitt argues that at little expense the construction would save uncounted lives and increase fishing productivity. Out standing in his own field?
Description: We don't often get the chance to admire the Stereo Pairs Collection so it is great to be able to do so! This noble statue of a man on a plinth complete with a globe in a very fine setting should provoke some interest? Who was it? Where was it and does it still stand? Compliments of sharon.corbet we learn that this is William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse KP PRS HFRSE (17 June 1800 – 31 October 1867) was an Anglo-Irish astronomer who had several telescopes built. His 72-inch telescope, built in 1845 and colloquially known as the "Leviathan of Parsonstown", was the world's largest telescope, in terms of aperture size, until the early 20th century. From 1807 until 1841, he was styled as Lord Oxmantown and from 1841 as Baron Oxmantown. We have the scotch pines, all the fisheries in Connemara seem to have them, I wonder why? sharon.corbet won the race to identify the location for this photo, we are at Glendollagh House looking at Lissoughter Mountain or ‘Cnoc Lios Uachtair’ as it’s known in Irish, meaning ‘hill of the upper ring-fort’ it is situated between Lough Inagh and Recess. Mud, boats and quays - the Barrow at New Ross.

The quays are impressive but empty - which is rather surprising given the time when this image was captured! Tams and a Fez perambulating with a perambulator! (Rhyl in Wales)
Description: To end the week we have yet another example of a Clarke street shot. This kind of candid photograph is much practiced and has many followers. Given the equipment Clarke had available at the time however, these are especially fine examples! That young buck sitting on the side of the pram looks like he he is being held back or he would run wild! Where was it taken and when? Perhaps La Belle Province can help identify the headgear and help with the date? While others did help us with details of headgear (including the toddler's Fez and the ladies' Tam Caps), it was Frank_C who provided the most coveted of inputs - on location. In short, Frank's suggestion (seconded by others) is that this is the Parade in Rhyl, North Wales. And it is still quite recognisable today..... Photographers: J. J. Dead Slow or I Fire!!
Description: Here we are back in Cork again, on "the Banks", looking at the Lower Glanmire Road from the Marina. I think it will be a challenge to get a good date, though perhaps the buildings on the North side will help? I also look forward to hearing all the details of the uniform worn by the would be artillery man.... Based on inputs in particular from guliolopez, ofarrl and Niall McAuley we learned quite a lot about the subjects here. While we initially thought that the cannon pictured was the "time gun" (used by Cork's port authorities to signal 10am daily), this was actually slightly further upstream. What we have here therefore is a non-firing trophy gun. This one was captured during the 1855 Siege of Sevastapol. It seems (conincidentally, or just for the fun of the photo) to have a member of a Royal artillery unit standing alongside it. As with much of the other (non human) subjects in this image, the cannon remains in place. As do most of the buildings and structures beyond - though the Marine Radio School at Carrig House is apparently significantly worse for wear.... Metropole Hotel, Cork
Description: This Wednesday we take a trip south to the City of Cork. Have you ever wondered what the word Metropole actually means? We have seen hotels in Dublin and now Cork using it. Well wonder no more I have found that "The Metropole" is the British metropolitan center of the British Empire; i.e., the United Kingdom itself. It is sometimes used even more specifically to refer to London as the metropole of the British Empire. Wikipedia Our friend guliolopez (who always seems to miss the Cork related photos) will know the answer to the following question, are the Musgrave Brothers we see here the same Musgraves which established Centra and Supervalu the biggest retail operators in Ireland? Castle on the hay covered hill
Description: This beautifully restored(?) castle set in a field of early cut hay is this offering from the Stereo Pairs Collection. When you think how old these images are the quality and clarity is just remarkable. Where is it and what does it look like now? With thanks to sharon.corbet we got answers to both of these questions. The first answer (where?) is that this is Kilwaughter Castle, an early 19th century mansion close to Larne, County Antrim. The second answer (look like now?) is that it doesn't look so great. Seized during WWII, it fell into ruin from the 1950s onwards, and barely a shell remains. There does however seem to be a campaign to see it restored.... Charabanc at the Lake Hotel
Description: This delightful shot shows a "Charabanc" or "Omnibus" loading up with happy trippers outside the Lake Hotel in Inchigeela, County Cork. The image is full of detail including hats, horses, people - but any dogs? As evidenced by the modern Flickr view highlighted by BeachcomberAustralia, and the modern StreetView shared by Niall McAuley, while the traffic in Inchigeela has changed, the businesses on view have not changed too much. Indeed, even the signage (for the Cyclist's Touring Club on the guest house, and Murphy's sign on the public house) has similar equivalents today. It is these original/older signs which help date the image - to perhaps the late 1890s or 1900s.... Description: While this is NOT the exterior of a Gothic revival/restoration stone church it just may be the interior of just such a church. This appears to be one of a number of images of the same church in the archive. This one shows a beautifully clean, tidy and empty church all ready for Sunday service but where is it? Description: A visit to the Stereo Pairs Collection today and to a country church(?) with "square tower of rubble masonry". The shot has been reduced to a single image for ease of viewing on Flickr. In the past we have been able to identify places and times by the tombstones but I am not sure the detail is there on this one. While we'd originally titled this with a line from Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, ("The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep"), Niall McAuley schooled us that, technically, a hamlet (almost by definition) is a settlement that doesn't have a church. Shortly afterwards, based on cues and clues that hinted at a Cork based location, and in particular a similarly titled reverse view, sissonni established this as the "old" St Finbarre's Cathedral in Cork. As it was demolished and replaced, by William Burges, from 1865, we know that this image must have been captured before then.... Callow Hill, Roundwood, Co. Wicklow
Description: Having assumed that yesterday's "location unknown" image would keep everyone busy for a few days (how wrong I was), I hadn't really prepared anything for today. And hence have not taken the time to investigate the background to today's offering. Presumably however the "Vartry" reference in the image connects it with the Vartry reservoir and water works of the mid-19th century.... Based on extensive inputs from abandoned railways, sharon.corbet, BeachcomberAustralia, O Mac and in particular Niall McAuley we learned a lot about both the inanimate and human subjects of this shot. Put simply, based on the OSI maps, similar catalogue images, census records and related publications, this tank is indeed part of the Vartry reservoir and works. Not only that, but it is 99% certain that the people pictured are Murtagh Geoghegan, Mary Geoghegan and one of their sons (Thomas, Patrick or John). This family lived at the nearby and aptly named "Tank House", with Murtagh acting as caretaker of this part of the water works. While John Gray was commemorated with a statue on O'Connell Street for his efforts in bringing fresh water and improved conditions to Dublin's citizens, we're delighted to acknowledge the contribution of the Geoghegan family ourselves today :) Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Railway Station House, Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow
Description: Back when railway stations were designed with a sense of style and purpose, this confection was landed in Bagenalstown in County Carlow. The symmetrical design was to cater for the vast flow of passengers in and out - though they had departed by the time this shot was taken. However, careful examination will show that a couple of special passengers are making their way to the right hand entrance and near the left there is a d..... We learned that this station, together with several other "picturesque gothic" stations in Ireland, was designed by English architect Sancton Wood. Description: The triumphant pose of the figure above those boulders reminded Morning Mary of the old tonguetwister. Shot by Mr. French on a cabinet sized camera it would appear to be in a not so accessible position at Carrignagat, Collooney, County Sligo. This monument, dedicated to 1798 leader Bartholomew Teeling commemorates actions at the Battle of Collooney. Built by sculptors Harrison & Sons of Great Brunswick St, Dublin, our contributors tell us that the Teeling Monument was unveiled on the battle's centenary - 1898. Description: From the delights of Woodstown in Waterford and wasp waisted women to ancient artifacts and abodes in Sligo! This fine celtic cross appears to have been beautifully decorated, and is positioned with a tower in the background. Some great vertical lines in the shot. Is it still standing and in that location? Even though this image may have been mirrored in the scanning/digitising process, BeachcomberAustralia and Rory_Sherlock quickly and concurrently identified this as Drumcliffe, County Sligo. Go west young man, go west!
Description: Killala Bay, Kilcummin, Co. Mayo looking pristine with a sharp horizon line is todays offering from the Lawrence Collection. Given the size of Killala Bay this could be looking North, South, East or West and we could still have such an horizon but no doubt the cartographers among you will have the shot properly oriented in jig time? Today's contributors point-out that the main difference between this image and the modern StreetView is that Kilcummin's stone pier/breakwater has not yet been built. There is evidence that this may have been constructed after c.1893, and likely before c.1898 - when a plaque commemorating a French landing in 1798 was seemingly unveiled. This event was (somewhat unusually) marked on the historic OSI maps, along with a label identifying these cottages as part of the local coastguard station. The eagle-eyed amongst our Flickroonies also note that some of the men pictured are wearing coastguard uniforms. By the late 19th century these men were likely more on the lookout for troubled fishingboats than for French invaders..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue c.1865-1914. Pier, Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare
Description: We stay in County Clare and with the Lawrence Collection for the last photo of the week. For a while, Ballyvaughan was the official capital of this region of Clare, sporting its own workhouse, coastguard station and a large police barracks. The small boat on the left looks like a Galway Hooker to me, what do you think? Almost single handedly, B-59 helped refine the range, identify a key subject, and pinpoint the location. The date (previously a 50 year catalogue range from the 1860s to 1910s) is likely to be between the mid-1890s and early-1910s. This is based on the fact that the main identified subject (the steamer S.S. Duras) seemingly ran cargo and passenger services to this per (confirmed as at Ballyvaughan, Co Clare) from after 1893 to before 1912. Thanks B-59! Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Sunday's Well, Cork City, Co. Cork
Description: We are staying in the "Rebel County" today, just because it is a good thing to do. I believe all Corkonians will agree with the decision to present this wonderful landscape / cityscape. I am not very good on sports, where is swordscookie when you need him? Probably off somewhere nice enjoying the Sun! If he was here he might explain why rugby and Sunday's Well seem linked in my mind? Though labelled "Sunday's Well" (and the foreground certainly includes much of that area of the northside of Cork), the consensus from contributors to this image is that it was taken from off Donovan's Road on the south side. Perhaps from Connaught Avenue, but certainly across the Western Road and taking in the city entrance to UCC.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Quays, Derry City, Co. Derry
Description: Staying in Ulster again to end the week and today visiting the lovely city of Derry on the banks of the Foyle! The Quays have shipping tied up - but it does not look like a hive of activity. Looking at the timbers on the quay it is most likely that a lot has changed in the interim? With thanks to all the usual incredible contributions in the comments, we've been able to map this location accurately. And refine the near 50-year catalogue range to perhaps a 15-year range between the mid-1890s and early 1910s. The latter is possible because of the vessels visible. The smaller vessel, nearest the photographer, is the Screw Steamer 'Harrier'. Built in 1892, she was torpedoed in 1943 (by u-boat U181). The larger steamer, just beyond, is the Packet Steamer 'Duke of York'. Built in 1894, she was renamed the 'Peel Castle' in 1911/1912, and pressed-into service as an Armoured Boarding Vessel during WWI. While the subjects on the leftside of this image are gone forever, it's worth noting that at least some of the focus from the rightside (including the city's Guildhall tower) remain as they were.... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Definitely after c.1894 (Duke of York steamship came into service). Group of people near the place where Kevin Barry was captured
Description: Keven Barry was arrested on 20th September 1920, are we dealing with a contemporary photo or one taken after the event, the Catalogue date of 1921 would suggest the latter? The general consensus is that this may have been taken some time after the events of 20 September 1920. Whether a few hours later, days later, or longer, the consensus is that more immediate contemporaneous photos (like this one) suggest a busier scene in the immediate aftermath. That this is the spot, on the corner of North King Street and Church Street, is confirmed however.... Photographer: W. D. Hogan Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection Date: Catalogue date c.1921. A Royal Plate for a Royal Hotel in Valentia
Description: This fine Royal Plate from the Lawrence Collection is our offering for today. A magnificent hotel taken on a sunny and calm day with lots of activity on the nearby pier and water makes it look the perfect vacation destination! The activity on the fishing boat tied to the pier caused me to look at it closely and the rig appears unusual. I would love to have that rig and the nets over the side explained to me? As with yesterday's image of Galway City, there is something of a sense of deja vu with this image of Knightstown on Valentia island - unsurprising given that we (and French, Mason and O'Dea) have visited several times before. This visit was perhaps early in the catalogue's c.1890-1910 range - as the clock tower (perhaps under constructions here) is dated by its NIAH entry to c.1870-1890.... Eglington Buildings and Claddagh Rings (Dillons), Galway City, Co. Galway
Description: On the first day on our search for the next 60 million views we have this lovely Eason image of the heart of Galway city. Galway is such a picturesque and welcoming place and this area is the beating heart of the city itself. The Claddagh Ring is synonymous with the county and has been explored here in the past. We were reminded today that we've visited this corner of William St and Eglinton St before - though perhaps not amongst the same crowds evident in this 2017 StreetView. The general consensus is that this image dates to perhaps the mid/late 1920s. Or even the early 1930s. At 1 in the afternoon. 'Dublin Time' :) Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Likely after 1922/23 (buildings). The Giants Ring in Kenmare
Description: To the Lawrence Collection this morning and to "The Giants Ring", Kenmare, Co. Kerry. It is not easy to pick it out due to the more modern construction dominating the foreground but there appears to be a ring of ancient stones as the feature? As Niall McAuley points out, the construction date of Kenmare Stone Circle itself (c.2500-1000 BC) doesn't really help with dating this image :) Niall's investigations on the nearby/visible houses however suggest that this image dates from after 1874. Helping narrow the catalogue range by a decade (to c.1874-1914). The lime kiln, on the left, was apparently part of a nearby quarry. The more modern landscaping and planting around the circle give it a much more lush and enclosed feel today... Renaissance Residence as Rustic Rural Retreat?
Description: A visit to the Mason Collection today and to a very fancy "Hatters Castle" type dwelling in County Westmeath. While it looks formidable those windows and doors probably indicate that it was never intended to repel anything other than the weather. Is it still standing and where is/was it? sharon.corbet raises interesting points. Firstly she thinks that this photo is reversed and I am inclined to agree with her. Secondly she believes this photo is some form of a cropped (and reversed) version of L_CAB_03197 and again we fully accept her proposition. The above points do beg the question as to the relationships between the different photographers, why? how? does Mason end up with a Lawrence generated negative? sharon.corbet DannyM8 O Mac Niall McAuley BeachcomberAustralia I think it is a dog and he/she has moved before L_CAB_03198 was snapped. A hive of activity - Main Street, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary
Description: It's a long way from Tipperary South Riding and Cashel to Tipperary North Riding and Roscrea but only if you are trying to walk it! We started the week with a visit to Cashel of the Kings and here we have the Main Street of Roscrea of the Abbeys! This beautiful royal plate from Mr. French shows a scene of great activity, a public fountain and a mysterious building in the middle of the highway. I wonder what can help us to date the shot even if we cannot identify any of the donkeys? While we couldn't identify the beasts of burden, the burgeoning businesses seemingly help date this image to before c.1901. The fantastic fountain still stands apparently - though moved to nearby Rosemary Square. The marvelous and mysterious market house however did not survive the 1920s - perhaps unsurprising given its placement in the "middle of the road" and the coming of the motor car by then..... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Definitely after c.1886 (central building). Fairy Rings and Flagpoles.
Description: They're not Fairy Rings of course, but rather enclosures to keep the sheep from eating the plants? To start the week we visit Valentia in Co. Kerry once again and this time to "Glenleam" and what appears to be an hotel or guesthouse. Mr. French appears to have been blessed with sunshine on his visits to the island and got some lovely images of that place at that time. This cabinet sized shot was taken after a trek it seems as he seemed to prefer Royals when he was on ground level! Our intrepid contributors tell us that Glanleam House and Glanleam Gardens are still open to visitors. And, though originally built in the late 18th century, still owe much of their current layout to Peter George Fitzgerald, 'Knight of Kerry', who the gardens in the early to mid 19th century..... Steeple, sun, shadows, skirts and Siezer the dog!
Description: This beautiful Eason shot of Rathgar at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries features the steeple of the Presbyterian "Christchurch" and a whole world of other detail! I love the fact that the vast majority of the people on view are ladies and girls! Electric trams but no motor cars might provide some clue as to the date but I could sit here all day and enjoy it. The general consensus is that this is after 1900 (electrified trams, fashions) and before 1920 (lack of cars, businesses visible, etc). Of the businesses visible, those on the left of the street (Heffernan's grocers and wine merchants at no.108 and Perry's fruiters at no.106) had a presence from the late 1890s through to at least the mid-1910s. Others (like Hanlon's butchers at no.107) seem to have been later arrivals - but apparently a fixture until the mid-1920s at least. Photographer: Unknown Collection: Eason Photographic Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1900-1939. Probably after c.1901 (tram electrification). Description: Yet again we have a case of deja vu! We seem to have seen aspects of this estate in the past though not the castle itself. A renaissance style castle set in the North of Ireland must have seemed pretty pretentious to the sober, hard working northern folk? To all our many supporters and contributors on this Photostream we the three Marys and all at Library towers wish you a very happy St. Patricks Day. To the Ireland team who take on England in a Grand Slam decider tomorrow we say COME ON IRELAND Thanks to BeachcomberAustralia, sharon.corbet, and Niall McAuley for quickly identifying that this isn't strictly a castle - but the 19th century Scottish Baronial architecture of Helen's Bay railway station in County Down. John Spooner also suggests that, unlike other stereopairs that he's helpfully "3d-ified" this image isn't an entirely true stereo image. Apparently both sides are identical..... Photographers: Frederick Holland Mares, James Simonton Contributor: John Fortune Lawrence Collection: Stereo Pairs Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1860-1883. Certainly after 1863 (construction). Perhaps some time after (ivy?) NLI Ref: STP_1995 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Clonhugh, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath
Description: From the moving statue of King Billy to a big, a very big, house outside Mullingar in County Westmeath. This large building with extensions looks like yet another country house converted into a convent or school. Am I right? Morning Mary I have to tell you you are wrong! Within minutes Niall McAuley told us that the house is currently a private dwelling. Messers French and Lawrence are also incorrect with their spelling, it is in fact Clonhugh not Clonugh as on the face of the photograph. I love the story posted by BeachcomberAustralia from 1891, under the heading DOG BITES LORD GREVILLE Lord Greville, I am sorry to learn, was bitten the other day by a dog at Clonhugh, his lordship's seat in County Westmeath. The popular peer left Ireland immediately, and travelled "right away" to Paris, there to place himself under the care of M. Pasteur. By this time I hope he is completely cured........ We are presuming that he visited the one and only Louis Pasteur who discovered pasteurisation and also developed a vaccination for anthrax and rabies, again we are presuming the rabies jabs were the object of the dash to Paris by Lord Greville. Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Likely 1870s NLI Ref: L_ROY_05226 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Tennis Court (with slight obstruction) in Boyle
Description: Back to the old reliable Lawrence Collection today and a visit to the beautiful town of Boyle in County Roscommon. Titled "Tennis Court, Boyle" this image appears to be more about the statue than the tennis court in the background but don't let the truth get in the way of a good story :-) And indeed it was/is a good story. This statue, of King William III, had been moved to this location (from a nearby bridge) in the early 19th century. As with other memorials to King Billy, it suffered several defacements, before being entirely removed entirely before the 1930s. The general consensus is that this image dates to before 1905 - when the statue was seemingly beheaded. The pedestal remains, and is a landmark in the surrounding parkland and "Boyle pleasure grounds".... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: Catalogue range c.1865-1914. Before 1905 (statue) NLI Ref: L_ROY_07368 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie
