Bombardment damage to houses on Lilly Street. This street no longer exists but ran between Thorpe Street and Arabella Street on the Headland, Hartlepool. The bombardment of the Hartlepools by Germany took place on the 16th December 1914. This was the first time British civilians were in the line of enemy fire during a World War. HAPMG : 2003.404.9

    I had no idea the bombardment was so extensive. This photo is of interest to me as my parents came to live in this street 40years after this event. The street was behind Marine drive and was demolished in the late 1950s.
