Alarm clock with a piece of German shell embedded in the dial. The clock was damaged during the bombardment of the Hartlepools on 16th December 1914. It is said that the clock stopped at the time of the shell hitting it. The clock belonged to a resident at 14 Collingwood Road but is now part of the collections at the Museum of Hartlepool and is on permanent display. Ironically the clock was manufactured in Germany. This is now on display at the Museum of Hartlepool! It's one of my favourite objects! Tells you the exact time the shell hit, as that's the time it stopped! What a great item to have, and a photograph of it in situ too!

Everything about this photo amazes me. Look at the detail of work that was put into products back then. I love the texture and surrealism of this image! Definitely a fave!

I had the pleasure of meeting a descendent of the family who owned the clock. Apparently they were running out of their house when the shell that stopped the clock exploded in their house. The insurance claim for the property also still exists. A claim for 2/6 was made for the clock! We recently chose this clock above all other objects from our collection as the objects which tells a 'history of the world' in the national museum project in partnership with the BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/objects/66hFydiFQrCzl8q1...

Well, I'll be.........I used to visit Gray's Art Gallery & Museum with my great dad at least once or twice a year when I was a kid. I had my favourites and I used to always get dad to put a penny in the slot of the victorian automaton house that had you summoning upon the services of the fire brigade to come and rescue the baby (I think it was now). I'd forgotten all about this clock until I spotted your posted pic and thought I've seen this clock before!.......Another blast from the past! -excuse the pun. Thank you for all the opportunities for nostalgia.
