Presentation of first aid medals to N.E.R. staff and others who assisted following the bombardment. The group are pictured outside the Grand Hotel, West Hartlepool. The bombardment of the Hartlepools by Germany took place on the 16th December 1914. This was the first time British civilians were in the line of enemy fire during a World War. HAPMG : 1990.6.2

    My grandfather, Joseph Featherstone, was a railway ambulanceman in Darlington until 1911, when he migrated to Australia. I wonder if he would have been involved in this incident, if he had remained in England.
