Charles Wing Brown was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1890. He received his primary education in the Columbus school system and later attended Cornell University, where he studied mechanical engineering. He married Katharine Gage, a Cleveland native, in 1917. The couple resided at 1684 Cambridge Boulevard. Brown was employed by the Columbus Mill and Mine Supply Company but in his spare time enjoyed playing tennis and duckpins. He and his brother, Will Brown, were both tennis enthusiasts and competed in the doubles tournament as members of the Upper Arlington Tennis Club. Brown was also a member of the Columbus Athletic Club.
