John Wesley Pontius was born in Chicora, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1906 and later attended the Boston Theological Seminary. Pontius served as secretary of the University Y.M.C.A. and worked in that capacity both locally and internationally, supervising Y.M.C.A. activity in England with the American Expeditionary Forces. While Mr. Pontius was stationed in England, he reported on his activities there in a series of contributions for the Upper Arlington monthly magazine, the Norwester. He and his wife, the former Miss Hazel Dolin of Columbus, Ohio, had one daughter, Jean. Mr. and Mrs. Pontius were members of the first Upper Arlington Book Club. Mrs. Pontius served on the first board of education in Upper Arlington. The family resided at 1776 Upper Chelsea Road.
