Miss Mary Boyer was the first schoolteacher in Upper Arlington. She taught the village's first, second, and third grades during the 1917-1918 school year, establishing the foundation upon which the Upper Arlington school system was built. She was also the teachers' committee chairman and one of the first four teachers in the resulting school system, which opened in October 1918 with an initial enrollment of fifty-two students. Miss Boyer instructed fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in the newly created school system.
