    I wonder whether "leave" means that the soldiers are on leave. They certainly seemed to be lined up at the theater door.

    I agree with swanq on the interpretation of "leave". There were probably restaurants that were approved for soldiers on leave by the US military. The theatre entrance probably gives access to the cafe restaurant that is part of the Hotel Dahmen. This hotel, with the distinctive Marktkreuz built into its facade, seems to have survived into the 1950s (according to pictures found on the web) but i can't find any contemporary pictures on-line.
